| Yorkie with Allergies? Please help! If your yorkie has allergies, how did you discover it and what did it look like? I think Oliver may have allergies, but three different vets couldn't figure it out!! He has had a few episodes of outbreaks. They are just around his neck and on top of his head. Little bumps. THey aren't even red- but skin colored. Once he itches them they scab and fall off. The vet said it was puppy pemadurous (SP) but it doesn't seem to be going away this time. He finished some antibiotics mid October and it's already back!!! Help, anyone?!

| What kind of food is he on? Does it contain any corn, wheat, gluten or multiple meat sources? What kind of shampoo/conditioner are you using? Those would be the obvious places to start. Has the vet done allergy testing? It is expensive to do, but if nothing else is working can save you lots of money ultimately on vet visits and meds. Gingersmom had Ginger tested not too long ago and they found lots she was allergic to - most in the food groups. There are a few others here who have undergone the allergy testing and were able to clear things up. Try PM'ing Gingersmom....

THen he didn't have one for a LOONG time. 6 months! NOw two back to back! THanks for the advice though

If it's real bad maybe, you should take him to the vet and have them do an allergy test to find out exactly what it is that he is allergic to.

| Ya know, one of my Yorkies had skin problems for a about year - due to allergies what my vet told me. I would take him in to get cortizone shots every so often or antibiotics would be prescribed. BUT - since I have started cooking meals for my dogs, the skin problems have completely gone away, his skin and coat look great! I really enjoy cooking for my Yorkies too, nothing warms my heart more to see my dogs eat like little pigs over something I made for them. I bought a doggie receipe book to I know what is OK to give them and what isn't. I am not sure if cooking for you dog is something you can do but it might be something to consider to see if it clears up the allergies. |

| My last dog had severe allergies (coincidentally his name was Oliver too!) and I did vet tests for years - after hundreds of $$ they still couldn't tell me what he was allergic to. Even though I tried switching his kibble several times, I never tried home cooking for him. I think that's probably worth a shot. Dog food is so full of fillers and preservatives, he could be allergic to any one of them. You could try the natural diet and if it doesn't improve things in a few months, then go do the (expensive) vet tests. |
