I Love Thor Donating Member | Aggressive Females I am interested in hearing stories about aggressive/protective/etc. female yorkies. I hate to make this post kinda depressing, I'm just wanting to get an idea about if males generally tend to be more aggressive. Please share. Thanks |

| If you approached any of the males I have had they would come to a stranger and let them pick them up. On the other hand, my females would back away and bark. Can't really say I've had an aggressive male or female, none of mine have ever bit anyone. |

| Dominant Female Abigail was the first born and Alpha/Dominant female in her Litter, she was the largest one too......she terrorized her Mother and littermates, her Breeder gave me a deal @ $1,000.00 to take her @ 7 weeks she kept the rest for 12 weeks. She is now the most calm relaxed Female, but let her hear a noise or the doorbell ring.....she will bark and growl fiercely! At the Dog Park she will not hesitate to defend her personal private parts against forceful males by snapping at them, I do of course pick her up if she needs it. My male will let you take him anywhere, a perfect candidate to be stolen, he will "Kiss" you to death. Did you mean "Aggressive" towards other Dogs or Humans? They are never aggressive towards humans, she will just shy away if they don't like them or back away and bark. Artie will only snap at a bigger dog if he's trying to hump him or he feels backed into a corner and sometimes will even lay on his back in submission. IMO. it depends on what you perceive as aggression or level of tolerance? I don't think it's aggression if they are defending themselves? |

| I apolgize in advace for being so defensive, but I am very discouraged and desperately trying to change this behavior. I have "socialized" her since I got her (10wks) and done everything "right" supposedly, yet am still having problems. It is not only depressing but upsetting to read these posts and feel like I am absolutely the only person with a defensive/aggressive dog. And yes- I am consulting a specialist. However, the one specialist uses choke chains, which I am VERY opposed to. I am trying to find others to contact.

| Mitzi is agressive towards other dogs. She snapps at their noses as soon as they come close enough. She would also run towards them to get them. She is rather shy with humans and hides behind us. Mitzi was never socialized with other dogs b/c there where no 'suitable' small dogs around when she grew up. She was also the biggest in her litter and the 'boss'. When we meet other dogs we pick her up and always get this:"My dog is friendly!" comment what we have to answer with:"I'm sure of that, but this little Yorkshire Terror isn't!" |

| My Gwen is very aggressive, as a matter of fact I posted asking for help in dealing with her. She will go after the smaller ones in our house and will attack them. I was told by several on this site to re-home her, but, I have not and will not do that. She is not allowed to go out with the smaller ones, I use the x-pen to separate them. I have tried all avenues to no avail. I do what works for me. |

| Lexie , No you are not the only one with an aggressive Yorkie. I too have one. I have 6 Yorkies. My second female was just fine with my first female (who is 1 yr older) When my second female turned 18 mos she "attacked " my first female. 6 mos later she "attacked" my adopted 8 yo female. This aggression is so bad and the fights are vicious if one of my females gets to close to her. I have done everything in my power to change her and have also gone to a "behaviorist" and a dog psysic twice. About a year ago I read that aggressive behavior in a female starts about when they are 18-24 mos old (if they are going to be that way) and Tinkerbell was 19 mos when she started being aggressive. The trainer on Dog Whisper (Ceasor) claims aggressive behavior is the "owners fault" and that aggressive females and males can be changed. I have invited him to my house but he has not responded.LOL For almost 3 years now I have had to keep my aggressive female totally isolated from my 2 other females 24/7. I also have 2 males that aggression is not even on their list of qualitys and are very lovable and Moma"s boys. The funny thing is that a have a almost 3 yr old , 2lb 9os (very small) female who my aggressive female just loves to pieces and there has never been a issue at all. They even sleep together. I just don't understand why their behavior is so different. Some people have told me to have my aggresive female "put down" or give her away but my Husband and I can't stand the thought. We are leaving town tomorrow for the YTNR Ball in Nashville. Last year I brought my aggressive female and I was a nevous wreck a fight would break out the whole time. This year she is staying home and my Son is coming to house sit for us. Sorry for the long post but hopefully this answers the original post and to let you know Lexie you are not alone. Just do a search for "aggression" and you'll see how many posts there are on YorkieTalk on the subject. I'm REALLY glad to hear that you are looking for a trainer who won't use a choke chain. I hope you can find one who won't discipline your dog for aggressive behavior, but who instead will help to desensitize him to the things that make him defensive.

| My first yorkie Kramer (male) was very aggressive towards kids. He absolutely hated them and would bite them if they got close enough. He would also bite an adult if they were fearful of him. He would lunge at them and if they showed any fear he would try to bite them. I don't know why he got aggressive but he was about 5 yrs. old when it started. He was never aggressive towards other dogs just people. |
