| Getting Dew claws removed when spade Shylah still has her dew claws and some people in my yorkie group in Colorado said that I should get her dew claws removed when she is spayed as well as any baby teeth she still has. I can understand the baby teeth, but what are you all's feelings about getting her dew claws removed at that time. She is only 5 months now and I was hoping to spay her around 9 months. (After Christmas) Thanks for you thoughts in advance!

| I think I would ask the vet and see what they think. They might not even do it. |

| Kizzy is 7 months and my vet didnt think it would be good to remove hers, even when she got spayed. I dont know why, he didnt say and I didnt ask him. He just said if she has a problem with them then they might have to but he talked like it wasnt that important unless they did have a problem with them.

5 days old. Surprised to hear she still has them. Ask your Vet, I do know they tend to bend into the leg. That is one reason why they are removed.

| Don't do it. Just keep them trimmed and always tell the groomer about them, so they don't hurt them. Go read this whole thread as well as the links we provided. It will tell you all about it. It is painful. Why put her through unnecessary pain when it isn't necessary. Just keep them trimmed so they don't catch on anything. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=dew+claws

| Ahia also has her dewclaws. I asked my vet about the possiblility of having them removed. she said if it were her dog she wouldn't have it done now. it is painful, said it would be like having one of your thumbs cut off. She also said if you keep the nail trimmed there shouldn't be any problems.

| Maddie has her dew claws on her front legs. I've heard it's quite painful and takes longer to recover from the dew claw removal than the spay/neuter surgery. I wish Maddie's had been removed when she was a few days old, but since they weren't, I'm just letting them be and keep them trimmed.

| My Jack Russell / s**tzu mix had ......... one dewclaw on her back left leg. It was dangly and she kept catching it on things so I asked the vet to remove it when I had her spayed. I didn't even know that it would be painful for her. She never complained and recovered from the surgery quickly. I think it would have been more painful if I wouldn't have had it removed and she tore it on something later. My chihuahua has her dewclaws and the nail does tend to curl and start poking her if I don't keep it clipped short. I don't think that I would have the vet remove them if it is that painful. |

| Definitely ask the vet and get his opinion. Also, you could call around and see what others have to say. Good luck!
