| ![]() Collars can cause horrible problems with dog's tracheas. My parents dog has problems with his trachea becasue he used to pull on a collar when they walked him because they didnt know any better. My boxer also does this. And besides if you need to pick up your dog in a hurry, like to keep them out of harms way you really cant with a collar on or you will hurt them. If they have a harness on you can becasue harness put support on the chest area instead of the neck which is why they are so much safer. I have also heard some horror stories with young puppies wearing collars getting caught on pens or other furniture and hanging themselves. I would never put a collar on a young puppy unsupervised and on an older dog I would only use a collar if you are putting ID tags on it. You can put ID tags on harnesses as well because they have a d-ring just like a collar. I use cute harness dresses and vest when I walk my girls but I dont leave them on them all the time. If you want to leave a harness on your dog all the time I'd recommend a nylon type harness. I personally dont leave a harness on my dogs all the time becasue I am afraid it might rub on their skin, plus they dont go outside very much.

| ![]() I agree 100% with Shana. I prefer the step-in type harnesses because there is NOTHING anywhere near the neck area. If you want to leave a collar on all the time, try one with a "break-away" buckle. |

| ![]() I have to use a harness on Tiny because he does have the collapsed treacha and I was also told that if you hit or the collar strains the neck then it can cause the CT. I perfer to use it now anyways...Just seems more comfortable on Tiny anyways..I dunno, guess its a personal choice, but I would defanitly go with the use of a harness.. |

Shana (tinkerbells closet) has great harness vests/dresses and Connie (thats her membe name) also makes great harness vests/dresses And, although I've not bought one yet, GoFetch.com is owned by a member and their harnesses look really nice.

| ![]() I've always used a harness on Kizzy. Since we have our fenced in yard now, I have her and Maggies collars on during the day. I leave them outside to play off and on and I want some id on both of them and I dont like them wearing harnesses all day. So they both wear collars unless I take them outside the fence then I put their harnesses on them to go for walks but I dont walkthem that much now. They have plenty of room to run all over the place and play with out having to be walked. And believe me they get plenty of exercise. They run up and down about 8 steps a day everytime they go out to potty or to play. They lay on the deck a lot but when they want outside I like to make sure they do have id on them just in case something should happen and them figure a way to get out of the fenced area. But I agree with the rest. If your gonna put a leash on where their gonna have to tug make sure they wear a harness. I take my dogs collars off every night. I would never leave them in their harness or collar over night.

| ![]() Harness is for sure the best for walking... I do keep a collar on my baby for the tags... but do not use it for walking... Although I use to, then my baby, Peaches started pulling and would choke herself, so then I would not walk her until I got my harness.

| ![]() I just got a step in one from Chattiesmom and highly recommend them. Chewie looks great and it fits perfect! He does wear his collar at home with his tags on it, but I walk him in his harness. If I leave it on him he tries to chew it. Jee, the name fits, huh? Last edited by dcelmo; 09-03-2006 at 01:47 PM. |
