| Postponed Spay due to bloodwork, AprilLove went in for the spay today and the vet has postponed it. Her bloodwork showed a low blood platelet count and she (vet) wants to send it out to a lab for a CBC and to do a manual count. (Of the platelets?) Now of course I am worried sick, wondering if there is going to be any bad news ie why is it low, underlying condition? Poor AprilLove started shaking the moment we got in the car this morning to go to the vet and she NEVER does this when we go for rides. How did she know? I was acting normal and did not treat her any different specifically so she would not sense any concern on my part. I am very thankful for the pre-bloodwork, but at the same time, concerned on what we will find. Please has anyone had this happen (low platelets) and if so what the cause was? I will be discussing with vet tomorrow or Monday when labs come back, but trying to research it till then. The most I come up with so far is this site that tells some of the causes of low platelets http://home.gci.net/~divs/disease/lab_tests.html#cbc MaryKay worrying about my baby, praying all will come back normal |

| I wouldn't worry too much until you get the results. If the count is low, it of course creates a problem with clotting and since you were taking your baby in for surgery, even though bleeding is minimal, with the low count, the vet was just erring on the side of caution and wanting to make sure of what could be causing it and not cause your baby to have excessive bleeding during the surgery. And if there is something more going on than just low platelet count and possible a bit anemic, then your vet will know prior to surgery - try to look at it this way, the decision not to proceed with the surgery may have just helped your baby

| I agree with Magnolia, and her med advice is probably correct. It might just be something where she'll get some meds, and be OK in a couple of weeks or so. As for AprilLove being scared in the car, it's wierd, but dogs usually know when there going to the Vet, I dont know how they know, but they do

| Thanks for the responses. I know I should try not to worry, but easier said than done. I finally had myself all prepared to have this done, and was at ease with it this morning feeling good about the vet and procedures and ready to have it done with. Now the waiting is going to suck One good thing though, is AprilLove hardly had to spend much time in a kennel while there as everyone was holding her whenever they had the chance and letting her great people that came in :-) she is so precious and spoiled and loved and special... hehe need I say more, I LOVE her. I just picked her up and she was so happy to see me as I was her. Praying it all ends up well MaryKay and my little winky-girl... AprilLove |
