| ![]() Angel has been scratching her jaw/under her chin I think quite frequently. I checked her skin in that area, and I saw what looks like a black scab. It doesn't look that black in the pics though. I attached 2 pics so you can see it. What do you think it is? |

| ![]() Oscar had little scabs like this under his chin and on his cheeks from scratching and it was just because his skin was so dry and itchy. I took him to the vet for it cause I didn't know what it was and the vet said that dogs can get 'puppy acne' sometimes and that it just looked like dry skin. They don't prescribe anything for it - just suggested some things to help his dry skin. He still gets little scabs from time to time from scratching, but it's nothing serious. I use a good conditioner when I bathe him and he's on the missing link supplement which seems to have helped quite a bit. One thing that the vet did suggest was putting Olive Oil in his food.

| ![]() Sometimes their beards get food stuck in them or the hair gets stuck together and that will cause them to scratch if it's not washed frequently. That looks like she may have been bitten by some little insect maybe. Hard to tell.

Mmmm.. hard to say, they usually dry up and come off on their own - you'll see them in the hair and stuff. Once I knew what it was I didn't really pay much attention to it - I check every once in a while to make sure his skin looks ok. I use Pet Silk Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and it seems to have done wonders for his skin - it's no longer dry and flaky - Ruthie also had really dry skin when I brought her home last week - we gave her a bath last weekend and there's no more flaky dry skin. BUT, I'm sure there are LOTS of other good moisturizing shampoos and conditioners out there that you can get right at your local petstore. I had to order the PetSilk online and in the end it was a pretty pricey purchase (shipping, customs fees, etc.). I think just using a conditioner makes a big difference - oh, and there are also some great grooming sprays that you can get (obviously not to be sprayed onto the dogs face) that help to replenish the natural oils in their hair, add sheen, and help prevent matts - I use Crown Royal which is sold at Ren's Pets in Oakville. I also got the Missing Link supplement from Ren's (by far the best pet store I've been in - they also sell the Texas Toothpick chews that my doggies love) http://www.renspets.com/mm5/merchant...egory_Code=SUP You can also order it off their site. I was unable to find it at any Petsmart or Petcetera stores in Mississauga, but maybe the Toronto locations will have it.

| ![]() anytime I've found anything I was concerned about like that i ALWAYS put neosporin on it for a few days and see if it starts looking better. I am one that truly knows neosporin is a very good antibiotic antiseptic for such things. But actually to me, it looks like possibly a tick could have been there at sometime or other. Did you know if a tick gets in your head and even after you remove it, you can still feel a small place like a bump in your head off and on over years? Hubby got one when he was young and for years he would get a little raised bump on his head and I looked at it before and it looked something like this. But please dont let that scare you as it maybe be from anything, But I would put the neosporin on it till I could take him to the vet but I would definitely take him to the vet.

| ![]() The scab came off. If it were a tick, it wouldn't come out by itself, would it? |

I'm not aware of ticks being in my area (Yonge & Sheppard), and I'm not sure where ticks are found. TCC bought Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe shampoo, which we used on her today, but we still used the PP conditioner. We're going to see if the oatmeal shampoo reduces her scratching. If the shampoo doesn't do anything, we'll try Missing Link. The salesman at Happy Tails Dog Spa where the shampoo was bought asked what the problem was and we told him. He said their store is a holistic store. He said it could be her food (we feed her Nutro Max Mini Chunk and Max Chicken, Lamb and Rice). The dry food has corn gluten meal and wheat in it, but a lot of people on YT say Nutro is a good brand. He gave us a sample of Wellness Super5 Mix Puppy. I'm not sure if we're going to feed this to her or not. He said if we feed her the Wellness and it doesn't change her condition in 2-3 months, we could try Microtek (sp?) anti-itching spray. | |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() i took Cali and Maya to the vet today as Maya has sores in several spots and one is huge and CAli has scratched the fur off by her nose. The vet said they are bacterial infections and put Maya on a oral antibiotic and Cali on a topical antibiotic.
