Bonjour!! I'm Shelley and I'm also new to this site. I happened to fall upon it while searching for information on luxating patella and what a place this is!! Very very informative. Last night at supper, I kept telling my husband : "well I read that....and I read that....". I love this site. My husband and I have been married for almost 2 years (been together for 9) and bought our Yorkie almost 3 years ago. Her name's Mia and we just love her to death. We live in New Brunswick, Canada...any Maritimers out there???? It's fun cuz any questions I had I made a search and there was some information on that subject (ex : Greenies, luxating patella, car seats, etc.). Now I just have to figure out how to attach Mia's picture next to my name

Default Advice please?

Hi,
I have a couple of questions...need your help. Do baby teeth that stay in alongside the adult teeth ALWAYS have to be pulled?
I found a totally adorable 14 month old, but she has two teeth like this. The woman pointed them out but said you don't have to pull them. This baby also is small, 4lbs and you can feel her backbone, so obviously she needs to gain weight. But is there more to that?
I really would like to have her, but don't want to get into trouble. The only other thing is to me.....and I know very little, is that her hair on top of her head (what was in the ponytail) seems thin. Not a thick bunch of hair that I see in other Yorkie pictures.
I don't care about the hair, just curious what you would think. Otherwise, her coat is very pretty color, long and she overall is a sweety. I went to see her and was there two hours just holding her and brushing her.
She is adorable, but I have to think with my head and since that's a bit hard for me, maybe you yorkie mommies can help.

Thank-you
Marcia

Welcome to YT Maggiepie!

I am in San Diego. I have three yorkies in my family. Where are you in California? Who is the breeder you are talking to?

I would definitely suggest having the teeth extracted or the dog will develop periodontitus and gingivitus and possibly lose teeth later in life which is never good. Yorkies tend to have problem teeth anyway and most vets recommend extracting the retained baby teeth when the dog is spayed or neutered at about 6 months after all the adult teeth are in.

Even without this, you need to brush their teeth everyday just like people.

As for her hair, I would not think that is a big deal if she is a pet and she is not asking an outrageous amount or money for her like she is a show dog or something. If her hair is like that at 14 months it will probably stay that way unless she is malnourished and you feed her better quality foods to improve her coat. Soem just do have thicker coats than others.

Good luck and I hope we can meet up sometime since we are in California!

Default Teeth

Hi and welcome...her teeth do need pulling at her age..it could be one reason she is under weight. Get her vet checked before buying, check for worms and other pararsites.

Animal Smiley 036 I'm a newbie!

Hi!
Just joined this site a couple weeks ago. I am hooked, hooked, hooked. I just love all the helpful info about raising a yorkie. I will be getting my yorkie in 5-6 weeks and am gathering all the needed supplies and writing down tips on how to care for one. I am getting a female yorkie puppy who I have named Muffin. The more I read posts on this site, the more excited I get thinking about the day when I will get to see my puppy in person for the first time. A little about me...I am married with a 5 year old daughter. I am a registered nurse and a nurse graduate student at UT Houston Health Science Center here in Houston. I am studying to become an adult nurse practitioner. I will graduate May 2006. Again, I just love this site!!!

GOOD LUCK ! We spoke before when you were puppy searching - I didn't know you're a nurse - Nurses are my heros - they sure are under appreciated and do so much for us ...it's a great profession and here in Houston you'll have tons of work - only one more year ! GOOD FOR YOU !

Default newbie newbie too

Hi
We joined YT about a month ago and have felt welcomed with open arms.
It has always been a personal goal of mine to own a puppy but for the past 16 years we have been so consumed with building our business ( we own a Bakery/Deli that is open 24 hours a day in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada - and we also manufacture all natural dog treats for a Canadian company) and felt that it would not be fair to bring a puppy into the house and not be able to give it the proper care required. Well, my goal was achieved at Christmas when my husband brought home Sedrick (my gift). I was not expecting this AT ALL but have learnt to adjust our schedule to accomodate all of his needs and we actually spend alot more quality time at home!!
After his spinal trauma that I posted about I have learnt so much about the breed and their incredible will and tenacity to live. Sedrick has taught us to live each day to its fullest and that all acheivements are done in "puppy steps". As I write this post, he can now stand unaided and is actually taking small "puppy steps" on his own!!
thanks YT for the wonderful site and thanks to all members for being such caring and loving people.

My name is Gerry and I'm chewy's mom. I live in downtown manhattan with my husband and our 6 year old son. I am currently a homemaker but I will be getting my real estate license soon and will be going back to work. I have had Chewy for only a month but he has brought so much joy to me. I had a pug for 7 years but he died in an accident last December. I was devastated. At first I couldn't bear to get another dog but then I started reading about yorkies and I starting warming up to the breed. Chewy has been the perfect dog for me. He plays alot with my son in the afternoon, but in the evenings he cuddles up with me and sleeps on my lap. He also follows me everywhere, so I think he loves me as much as I love him. Yorkies rule!

Hello fellow newbies and senior YTers! I joined YT in April of this year, though I read many of the forum posts long before when I was trying to decide on whether or not to get a Yorkie. I don't think I ever formally introduced myself or my Peanut, so here goes.

I am a graduate student at the University of Florida (Go Gators!!) and should be graduating with my PhD in December (keep your fingers crossed!). My boyfriend and I had been talking about getting a dog once we moved out of an apartment and into a house. We really didn't know what kind of dog we wanted, but we thought we wanted a large dog. He had always had larger dogs (most recently a Rottie), so this was what we were familiar with. His brother and his girlfriend then brought a maltese, and everything changed. That's when I decided I wanted a small spunky dog that I could love and adore. Then one day I got a phone call from my future sister-in-law saying that she friend at work had just recently bred her Yorkies and had pups that would soon need new homes. I was doing some online research into the breed, found the YT site and the rest is history.

Peanut is AWESOME! Some of you may have already heard some about him, as I have posted some stories and pictures. He is my new best friend and my boyfriend & I absolutely love him! He is ridiculously spoiled - he is our child! I have learned so much from this site and truly appreciate the friendly advice and funny stories. YT has become my new obsession (outside of Peanut, of course!).

Thanks YTers!!
