I thought of you all today!

We went to PetCo and I walk in and see this little girl. She was just adorable! I stopped and chatted and found out she was 8 months and was only 3 pounds! They also made sure to tell me that she was a TEACUP! This little thing made a trip from California all the way to Virginia! That is a LONG haul for such a small girl. I have to admit while she was adorable she really didn't look very healthy. It made me thankful that I have a 4.5 or 5 pounder. I have actually been trying to pack on the weight so he may be a solid 5 pounds now. She had been sick and so the lady was cooking hamburger and rice for her tonight. She was also saying that her teeth were bothering her a LOT. She had a double row of teeth and it makes perfect sense. Her mouth is just way to small and it is causing her pain. Diesel had a double row but it wasn't causing him any pain and he eventually lost them all. She was planning on having her fixed really soon and have them all pulled. I honestly don't think I would like to have one that little. No offense to anyone here with small babies. For the most part they don't seem to be as healthy as the ones that weigh more. Plus you have to be careful how you play. Diesel is a good size to play rough with at times. (He loves it by the way! LOL) He is also a good size to cuddle with. Any smaller and I would be scared of hurting him! Anyway I thought you all would love knowing that I have Yorkie on the brain so much that I often think of all the advice I have read here!!

that is tiny Peeka is 2.8 lbs at 13 weeks and i can't wait till he gets a little bigger so we don't have to worry so much

Yeah ... Gracie is about 2.2 lbs at 17 weeks so she is a tiny one she eats well and everything just a small girl! lets just say she has been having a little cat bell thing since the day after we got her!too worried about accidents!

It's sad that some people don't do there home work before getting a small yorkie. I am blessed with four yorkie, two standard and two small. Polly and Sprout are both under 3lbs and have been very healthy, Polly will be two in Feb and only been to the vet for yearly exam and to be fixed. Sprout is 11 months and also has been healthy. I know they are small and take the precautions when needed. Both mine came from standard parents. I think a lot of owners that have small yorkies might not know all they should and the furbaby suffers. I think if you have a yorkie small or big from a good breeder they will be healthy. The sad thing is that people want the small ones and bad breeders will do what ever to supply the damand. It is like anything else you by, you have to do research and see the whole picture before you get it. Polly thinks she is as big as her fur-sister and brother and keeps then all in line. She is the alpha of the bunch.

I don't think she bought her and then was surprised later that she was so small. I think she bought her for that reason only. At lesat she is getting her fixed that is good. I know I haven't gotten Diesel fixed but that is only becuase I am scared to put him under. I am the biggest spaz when it comes to him. I might get the neerve up one day.

These tiny ones are a headache. They are undersized for the breed and sometimes are because there is a health problem but not always. A Yorkie is a Toy breed and there are no other size varieties for the breed. Some are bigger and therefore considered oversized if they are more than 7 lbs at maturity. So Teacup, etc actually does not exist.
For any surgery for the undersized, rule of thumb ie. anything that looks like it will be under 5 lbs, I request my Vet put them on IV during surgery. This reduces the stress of the anesthesia and surgery and will give a ready mode to inject a drug needed if there should be a problem. For any that are full size under 4 lbs, I would have the Vet do a blood panel and BA test to be sure there aren't any liver/kidney or other problems they would need to be aware of.
For any of you that have these little ones and have been a little afraid of the surgeries and/or teeth removal, you could discuss these precautions with your Vet. I also make sure any Vet any of my puppy buyers are going to, are familiar with Toy breeds of dogs. It is a big difference Vetting large breeds of dogs compared to Toys.
