| How Long Does it Take for Food to Digest? Angel threw up her kibble in the carrier we took her in to the vet's, so I assume she got carsick for the first time. I fed her at 1:15 p.m., and we left my house about 4 hours later. The food wasn't digested. It just looked softened like when it has been soaked in water. How long does it take for them to digest their food? |

| Sorry I can't help you, but I would have thought it would have been digested after 3 1/2 hours. I'm sure someone on here will know and give you an answer.

| I don't know.. but Oscar has done that before too - thrown up whole pieces of kibble hours after eating. The vet once mentioned something about not chewing the food and eating it whole - it will then swell in their tummy and cause an upset stomach... not sure why this happens either... Maybe when they don't chew it (which would begin the digestion/breaking down process) and the food gets swallowed whole, the food doesn't break down as quickly in the body???? maybe that's dumb.. I dunno... I'd be curious to hear what others have to say about this too...

| The time it takes for food to travel through the digestive tract is known as bowel transit time. Bowel transit time is dependent on diet and varies greatly from person to person (or pet to pet). For example, people and pets who eat a high-fiber diet (large quantities of fruits, vegetables, whole grains - dry dog foods, etc.) tend to have rapid transit times and bulky stools. Bowel transit times vary greatly....depending on diet, fluids, and activity and other factors. If you're talking about the time it takes from the time it is eaten until your pup goes to the bathroom - it could take 6 - 8 - 12 - 14 hours........ How soon it leaves the stomach (is much sooner) but still varies a lot depending on the amount eaten, the amount of fluid, the amount of fiber - and many other factors. ****** For sure, a dog that eats a similar diet every day - close to the same time every day - will be much more regular than some of our pets who eat all sorts of different foods every day - at different times (I think this is the way I eat!!) I guess the answer really is that it just "varies a lot." Carol Jean |

| Hmmmm. When we picked our rescue Snickers up in Kansas (4 hrs away) he did fine the whole drive home with us. When we went to dinner last night - it was stop and go traffic for an hour and he LOST his kibble. It actually didn't smell as bad as a toddler throwing up - but there was whole food in there too. The only other new thing in his diet yesterday was a small piece of chicken jerkey. That wasn't chewed much either. The drive from KS to CO - he stayed low and slept a lot. On the stop and go drive, he was up high looking out the window. So. . . I think that made him carsick. Jodi |
