| Saying hi and a few questions I just wanted to say hi to everyone and say that I enjoy reading your posts, I've learned alot. And, I LOVE looking at the photos of all your beautiful babies! I don't have a Yorkie yet, but I have talked to several breeders and hope to get one soon. I hope it's still okay for me to post here in the meantime. I have been watching for sales on various pet supplies and have bought a bed and a few toys, and a food and water dish. What other supplies should I be buying so that I'm ready when I finally find my Yorkie and bring him/her home? It's been awhile since I've had a puppy, and I want to make sure I'm prepared. Do any of you use child playpens, or would something like that not be good? I was thinking it would be good to put the puppy in if I have to run a short errand or to keep it safe if I'm vacuuming or something. I look forward to getting to know you all! |

| Welcome to YT!!! I've seen others on here who use playpens. We love our ex-pen and it travels with us everywhere. I like it because it doesn't have a floor, so we can use it outside as well as inside (and when outside, she can go potty) Also, are you going to paper train or outside train? If paper training, you might want pee pads. We trained to the outdoors only, so didn't use peepads. What about a crate? How are you going to transport your baby home? Toys, toys, toys... Doggie toothpaste and fingertip brush (startem young) Comb/Brush (check threads here for best kind) Nail clippers (unless you won't be doing that yourself) Batteries for the camera!!!!

| Thanks to both of you for the welcome! I do have a dog carrier, so I'll be bringing the puppy home in that. Will put the other items on my list, thanks so much!! Also, what about the dog car seats? I thought they might be a safe way to take the puppy places, but I don't know alot about them. I plan to train the puppy to go outside, but that leads me to another question. I live in Ohio and the winters can be pretty cold and snowy. Do those of you who live in colder climates use doggy sweaters to keep them warm? I don't want the little thing to be cold. Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | well i haven't come to the winter thing yet i'm in utah but they do make sweaters and coats and a whole lot more for these babies and i would put something on it when it's cold out. as far as a carseat i'm bad i let him ride on my lap when i go sometimes other time i put him in his carrier. but they do make carseats for them there are people here who use them.

| Welcome to YT! I think it is really great you are coming here before you have your own puppy. It shows that you are going to be a great Mom. You'll need a harness (not a collar) and a leash. I bought a X-pen for my last baby and we did use it for like 2 months when she was still taking naps a lot and it helped with the potty training. Try to find a used one - I got mine off of ebay and it happened to be local so I didn't have to pay the high shipping and got a great deal. Pacifiers and those small little teething blankets with a stuffed animal head on one corner are really cute and they like them. And, of course, a digital camera so you can share pictures with us! |

| Welcome to YT!!! I am looking forward to getting to know you !!!!!!!! I think everyone pretty much summed up the supply list!! You will be fine. I have to say I love having a play pen. I use a baby human one. Its nice to let her romp and play in there and know she is contained. A new puppy!! What an exciting time for you. From the beginning of your search to when you bring her home. I just got my 2nd yorkie and its a wonderful experience. Good Luck!!! |

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | welcome to YT! you may want to have a comb or brush on hand, yorkies tend to get tangles easy, plus you will want a good shampoo, I use Tropiclean and I love it, it smells so good, you can buy it at petco. it may be a good idea to buy a baby blanket and when you find the right breeder, take it to her so the mommy of your puppy can sleep on it to get her scent on it, this will help you when you take your puppy home, the blanky will have the moms scent on it. when I took Lillie home, she laid on her blanket in the car. I use a expen, I like it better then a crate, you can get it open easier, there not so confind. good luck! cant wait to see your baby when you get it. ohh by the way, I live close to you! I'm in Indiana and it tends to get cold, so yes! a sweater is a good idea! my Lillie is pee pad trained, so she doesnt have to go outside in the cold. | New Yorkie Well I'm excited about you getting a Yorkie. You will absolutely love it!!! And to respond about the playpen, I used one when I first got my Yorkie and it worked great! But be careful because they can grow out of it and jump out. Even while their still quite small! Their like little rabbits! Frisky little suckers! |

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | Welcome! :) How exciting for you! I know that when you get your little baby you will FALL IN LOVE! These little things are TOTALLY addicting! lol. I didn't go through and read all of the replies like I should of, lol....but make SURE you get a tube of Nutri-Cal for your little one. You can get this at most pet shops. I get mine from PetSmart and it is $7.99 for a tube of it (and it will last you FOREVER since you don't have to give them all that much of it). I would recommend giving him/her a pea sized amount (just squeeze a little out onto the tip of your finger and he/she will lick it right off...THEY LOVE IT!) at night before he/she goes to bed, and any time you have to leave him/her alone by his/her self. You don't want that nasty Hypoglycemia sneaking up on you! The Nutri-Cal will keep their blood sugar up, and it also has other benifical ingreidents as well. Putting a shirt of yours in with your baby whenever they are sleeping or are going to be left alone by themselves is also a good idea. This "comforts" them and with YOUR SCENT being on the shirt, (or sock or whatever...preferably NOT a dirty one LOL j/k), it makes them feel safe and secure, like you are right there with them Also, it is a good idea to get him/her a blanket as when they are so little and don't weigh much, they get extremely cold. A little pair of the long-legged pajamas also work great to keep them warm...and of course they look so precious in them!! As for the play pen, I think it's fine for when they are little...but when they start to get a little older (around 3 & 1/2 - 4 months of age) I wouldn't personally recommend keeping them in one anymore. I used mine for Stedman in the beginning when we first got him, but then stopped using it when he was around 3 & 1/2 - 4 months of age because the little turd learned how to climb out of it!! (I HAVE PROOF! See the pic below...LOL) He figured out that he could latch his little claws onto the "mesh" thats on the side of the play pen and sure enough - he pulled himself all the way up and out of the darn thing! LUCKILY, however, my husband and I were right there the very first time he did it so we caught him...WHEW! These little ones can snap their neck sooo easy, so you really have to watch them and be extremely careful. I ended up getting my little Stedman a cage (I have also posted a picture of this) that I got at PetSmart for about $39 bucks which is so much more safe in my opinion. I got him the medium sized one so that he would have a little more room to move around in there (even though they show a picture of a Yorkie on the small sized cage's box...I just feel that he is more comfortable, and has more room to move around in the medium sized cage). I bought him a BIG squishy, over-stuffed "pillow" to go in the bottom of it so that he will be much more comfortable for whenever I have to leave him alone during the day (which isn't all that much as I work at home). I got the "pillow" at PetSmart for $19.99, which is not bad at all considering it is HUGE and stuffed so full and is so comfy for him It covers the entire bottom of his cage...it is that big!! Anyway, below are pictures of both the cage AND the pillow that I bought him. Oh and of course a picture of his spoiled little butt crawling out of the play pen! LOL All-in-all they are WONDERFUL little things and once you are owned by one your life is forever changed...FOR THE BETTER OF COURSE!!! Don't forget to post pics of your new addition as soon as you get him/her! I am SO excited for you!!!

| Thanks so much for all the suggestions, and little Stedman is just adorable!! One of my main concerns about the playpen is that they could either chew the mesh or crawl out. I think an expen would be much better. I mostly want something to keep the puppy safe when I can't watch him/her closely. My puppy list is growing daily, I can't wait to get one!!! |
