| Very often the excess tearing that continues after the teething has stopped is due to a clogged or missing naso-lacrimal duct. As a routine, when I have my dogs' teeth done, I have the vet flush those ducts. They are found in the inside corner of the eye right where the eye and the nose meet. They drain excess lubrication from the eye into the nose..same as in humans. When we cry we have to blow our noses a lot because the tears drain thru the N-L ducts into our nostrils..they become snot. Injuries, allergies and entropion are all causes of this problem.. You might try cleaniing the eyes 2 times a day with a cotton ball soaked in warm salt water- 1 tsp salt to 8 ounces of cooled BOILED water---also can use any flush for human eyes cause you are just gonna wipe not squirt the sol. into their eyes. Make sure to use a CLEAN cotton ball for each eye and wash your hands often during the time you are working on them. DRY the area again with a cotton ball or soft strong tissue. I tear a cotton ball in half and use half for each thing I do. IF the eye-goobers are sticky, dark and/or smelly, that is most likely an infection and a vet will prescrible EYE ointments..DO NOT use any other meds except eye meds.. |

| I had a woman tell me today that giving them distilled water vs. tap water would clear up "runny" eyes. Obviously this won't help if it is an infection. This is probably just urban legand, but hey- I am willing to give it a shot!

| Freyja has recently had an increase of eye discharge (she's 4 mos. old) it is white colored so I don't think it is bacterial. Could she be having this because of teething? I've just been wiping it away with a warm wash cloth and using a fine tooth comb to get it out of her hair. I guess I will ask the vet when I see her next week for vaccinations. Patti |
