| big dog vs. little dog - fighting or playing? so here's the situation... my boyfriend has an 18lb jack russell/hound mix male puppy who is almost 8 months old. i, on the other hand, have a barely 2 lb 10 week old female yorkie. ideally, i would love for them to play together. on the other hand, i can't tell if they're fighting or playing. i don't know if i should be worried that the big puppy keeps opening it's mouth and sort of...nipping at my dog. lexy, my yorkie, of course refuses to back down, and half the time i think she's having the time of her life. i just cannot tell if i should be worried that rosco (my bf's puppy) might unintentionally hurt her. i want to leave them alone to "play", but my maternal instincts always makes me pull them apart and fuss over her. this seems to make rosco more excited because i am keeping something away from him. help? how can i have them get along...or are they getting along already? |

| sounds to me like they are playing if they werent the pup would cry so i dont think you have anything to worry about unless the bigger dog gets to ruff then just split them up till they have carmed down a bit. my yorkies use to play with 3 gsd and they were never hurt.

| It really has alot to do with the temperment of the bigger dog. If your yorkie is acting like she is having the time of her life and isnt yelping or trying to get away I would say Things are going good! But I sure dont blame you for worrying when she is so little. Sure doesnt hurt to watch for awhile! I sold a family with a great dane a under 3 lb yorkie male once. I really had to do some thinking about it. We talked alot and she wasnt worried in the least. The great dane had been exposed to small dogs before. I took the chance and the docile great dane and tiny fiesty yorkie male, sleep together, play together and the union has worked like a charm. I met the great dane before he left (boy was I nervous!) but he was like a piece of furniture. Very docile. It is a year later and all is well. The great dane is super tame and intelligent and loves his lil yorkie friend. |

| Yorkies are tougher then you think. My little guy weighed barely 2 pounds at 12 weeks and he reglarly plays with a nice 40 pound dog. He feels new dogs out but he should socialize with other animals. Just watch them. He will run to you if he is scared.

| Casper is a larger yorkie (10LBS) but he loves playing with dogs that are way bigger than him! when we go to the dog park he will try to play with the big dogs and shine other little ones on LOL. If your baby is not yelping or growling she's probably having a great time! Just watch them until your comfortable enough to know that he wont hurt her. My In-laws have a 45 LB queensland and she and Casper are best friends we just had to teach Shilo to "easy" with him and now they're best friends

| Dogs need time together -- sometimes it takes a couple of weeks for them to get used to one another and really start playing. When I first got my 8-week old Yorkie, from the get-go he started chasing my 21-pound Bichon all over the house. But - my Bichon was a little intimidated by all the attention and jumping on and chewing on he was getting, so he really tried to stay out of the little pup's way for a while. Now you can't separate them. They play their hearts out together. Good luck! |
