| What's going on? I hope this isn't a stupid question, I've never owned a female dog before. I have noticed lately, Layla has been licking at herself down there a lot... I was just getting ready to go out and I was throwing a toy for her while I was doing my hair and she wouldn't even look up, so I moved her head and I noticed she is super red and swollen around that area. I wiped it with a doggy wipe, and it just felt like a big swollen ball. She's 8 months old now, and I was planning on getting her spayed next week. Could this be her going into heat? I really don't know what's happening and I'm kind of worried

| Ahh I would say yes she is deffinatley going into her first heat! Symptoms are swelling and licking. I think you will have to wait a couple of months before you can get her spayed! |

| Thanks for the replies everyone. This isn't good news for me I was supposed to get her spayed at 6 months, but I'm a student and I finally have the money for it now. I guess I'm going to have to call her breeder, who is waiting for the papers to say she's been spayed.

| well that was kind of sloppy of me to leave it at that. I meant to add it is nothing to worry about unless you have male dogs around. if you do ,you better get a diaper on her or totally away from any other male for the duration and about 2 weeks after.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | definately in heat. Cali came into heat at 8 1/2 months and I had been putting off getting her spayed. She ended up getting spayed a week into her heat because they thought she had an intestinal blockage. it was much more complicated spaying in heat so it is best to wait 2 months

| I feel kind of stupid asking this, but I really know nothing about heats and I was hoping to not have to deal with it at all! So it will last about 2 months? I knew a guy whose family had a dog that bled all over their white furniture and carpet when she was in heat, but I was told last night that the amount they bleed depends on the size of the dog. Will she bleed much? And she hasn't bled yet, how long until it starts?

You can get her some doggie panties for when she starts to bleed. You'll just need to change out the pad and also, take it off for when she goes outside to potty. They usually swell for several days and then the bleeding will start.

| I have not noticed any blood yet, but it may have happened on my black couch or my black sheets and I just can't see it. I found a pattern and made little doggy panties tonight with a pad in them, but she HATES it, so I really hope this is already the second week!
