I'm researching about getting a Yorkie. I'm curious as to whether or not you knew your puppy was going to be 10 pounds or more? We love our 12 year old Tibetan Spaniel, who is 15 pounds. But I'm looking for a smaller breed for when I do therapy dog work. How often do you find they end up way bigger than represented as a puppy?

The general "rule of thumb" is to double the 12 week weight and then add one pound or so. Jackson pretty much followed this to a tee. At 12 weeks old, he weighed 6lbs and now as a one year old he is 12.5. So when you go looking for puppies (generally breeders won't sell until 12 weeks old if they're reputable) look for the ones that weigh between 4-6lbs already.

This thread makes me so sad - in a good way - I so miss my Sampson - Sam for short. He was 12 pounds - solid as a rock... I have tried for years to find another "biggin'" - but they are so hard to find! I finally purchased my new baby 2 weeks ago - I think she will be about 8 pounds or so full grown.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I was sort of confused about Gordon in the fact that he was getting so big. Seeing dogs that look more like him puts me at ease. Here's some pictures of him with his new haircut. He's almost 5 months and weighs about 10 lbs!

My Zipper is 16 pounds, 12 years old. Here is a good picture of him. He is and always has been as sweet as they come, despite having been through all kinds of adversity. I will always be grateful that he adopted me 6 years ago.

He has been through the loss of his original owner, a kidnapping, several serious illnesses, 2 major surgeries, two attacks (a raccoon and a Jack Russell) and now lives with diabetes and IBD. He had a stroke in February, but except for his dragging one leg a bit, you'd never know it. Everyone in the hospital fell in love with him, and were amazed at the way he fought to come back home with us! He is still famous there.

His "little sister" Puffer (5 lbs, 6 years old) is as beautiful and cute as she can be, but she's a true "devil-dog". As much as she teases and torments him, ZIp is almost always a gentleman, and even cries outside the bathroom door if we lock her inside for punishment.

He is my great big lover-boy. The best part of the day is when he climbs up on my stomach & chest and prods me with his paw and his nose to give him his pets and scratches. Whatever is bothering me disappears, and he "cures" my day!

and he gained 1.5 lbs. He is currently at 5.5 lbs at 4 months. We were told that he was going to be about 7-9 lbs full grown. I'm not sure how big he will get, what do you guys think?

Handsome fella! Is it me, or do the larger Yorkies seem to have more even dispositions that the squirts? I have been seeing more "mega-yorks" in my area lately. I used to be surprised at how few there were. I'd think they'd be very popular - so cute and sweet, and a nice "huggable" size!

i just wanted too ask a question because i'm confussed i see alot of people on here posting that there happy there yorkies, are so big am i not right that yorkies are toy dogs?
well 10 lbs and up thats close to regular size dogs right? then i guess i"m confussed why want a toy dog if you want 10 lbs and up thats not toy size anymore

Well, MOST people go into getting a Yorkie thinking they are getting a tiny tiny dog, but dogs, just like people... come in all different shapes and sizes. Jackson's parents were 8 and 9lbs, and he's now over 12lbs. Hey, it just happened. Yorkies, in the past, used to be much larger and were bred down smaller and smaller by people. Point is: I think people just love their dogs for who they are, and they realize it doesn't matter that they grew larger than they're "supposed" to.

Personally though, when I add a 2nd dog, I will definitely look for a larger one again. Jackson is so sturdy and I don't have to worry so much about him. Also, I LOVE the Yorkie breed & personality, but I want it in a larger package. I don't WANT a dog under 5lbs (that's no offense to people who do). It's just not my thing. Too much to worry about. Besides the fact that 12lbs is still a very small dog in my opinion. My goal was NEVER to own a dog to carry around in a purse or tote around shopping with me, so no worries on needing to carry him around. I really believe that Yorkies should be similar to Poodles and maybe have 2 size variations (poodles have the toy, standard, etc) I also don't think they're good to put in the "toy" category per say because so many people look at them as a little lap dog which generally speaking, they are not. They are true terriers and live up to their name most of the time Let's stick 'em in the Terrier category. lol.

yea i can understand where youre coming from.. but i bought a toy dog for a smaller breed dog in the standard size range..i never wanted a bigger dog..or a smaller dog to carry in a purse just smaller enough too be a lap dog yorkies are so high in price for there size

I think it's kind of dumb that they're priced differently, honestly. Why would you pay more to have a TINY dog that's probably going to have more health problems? That's not saying they all do, but the basic idea I've gotten from this site, is the smaller ones = more health problems. I didn't pay "high price" for Jackson and I didn't want a tiny tiny dog anyways so I never felt "cheated" or anything. It's not like I spent $2000 for a tiny dog under 5lbs and ended up being 12 LOL. Jackson was 5lbs when I got him at 9 weeks old!

My Jake is 10 weeks and weighs 5lb... i dont think i would like him 2 stay this little for ever.... we worry about him all the time now... looking forward 2 seeing how big he does grow...
