Need advise!

Hi all! I'm new to YT, and after much debate decided to post this question. I want to clarify that I am not looking for an ultra tiny Yorkie... just one in the breed standard. I've had two others - my first was a whopping 20lbs and I loved every ounce of him! We still have our second and he is 9 1/2 lbs. Pepper is as cute as can be, has a wonderful personality! However, after having one "Giant Yorkie" and then another large one; this time I would really like one that fits the breed standard. Can you give me some advise? I have a deposit with a breeder who has a little girl ready on Monday. The breeder says she will be within the standard. She currently weighs 1 lb 14 oz at 8 weeks & 3 days. Her mother is 10 lbs (I know, she's big ) and father is 5 or 6. I love that little girl! She's a doll! But do ya'll think I'm gonna end up with another large one? I can hardly resist her. Does anyone have any like experience with a puppy of a rather small weight, but large parents? Am I just falling for another cute puppy that will be over the standard????

Welcome! I don't know that is so hard to say,and momma is big... It is so hard to determine, ya never know..
Bailey's dad was 5 pounds his mom was 7,and he is 11.7 pounds...

I would not buy a yorke from someone whose parents were over the standard if you want a standard yorke.

I also wanted to tell you that you can never really tell by the puppy weight what weight t is gong to be thats why the parent weight s important. I have one that was 1 lb at 8 weeks and he s 10 lbs now. I have another that was a tiny 12 ounces and she is 6 llbs now.

I am by no means a breeding expert, but I would tend to agree with Chachi. My Chewy was only 1.6# at 12 or 13 weeks and he is just over 3.5# full grown. A nearly 2# yorkie at 8 weeks will be on the larger size of standard and not the tiny you may be looking for. I am gonna pm you with some info.

See, I think our Pepper is a doll!! But evey time we go out with him - EVERY TIME - someone says (with their lip curled up a bit) "Is that a Yorkie? It's the biggest one I've ever seen!" Before we lost Tobey (the 20 lber) I used to say well then you should see my other one at home! Ha! But anyway - I'm just really hoping for some feedback/ discusion to help me make a right decision this time. Thanks for yours!

Welcome to YT!
I'm not a Breeder, but if you want a Standard Yorkie, both parents should be standard. You might want to look into the parents pedigree. Most Breeders have
the paper's of their Yorkies, it will show you the family history.
Yorkies come in all sizes, but they all have hearts of gold.

Wow! Thanks for that info! How big were the parents? My breeder keeps telling me the parents weight doesn't always matter and things I've been reading agree to a point. She says some of her smallest dogs have produce the largest dogs and some of dogs that typically have larger ones turn out small. What's a person to do??? I can't afford a show dog that has had it's ancestry monitored for generations.... But this one is costing me quite a bit - it's not that I'm going cheep.

I don't think you have to buy a show dog in order to get a dog within the standards. It definitely does help to buy from a show breeder who breeds dogs within the standard though. You can't always be sure, but there's more of a chance to get a dog within the standards if both parents are as well. You could always choose to get a pet quality yorkie from a show breeder, they're not quite as expensive as show dogs.

I'm not sure that it matters. I have 2 yorkies Mollie is 2 years old and around 6 - 6 1/2 lbs and Wyatt who is her baby is 10 lbs at 10 months but, he is looks just like his dad and is all muscle and stocky. When he is wet he doesn't look any bigger than Mollie. His father was about the same size as Mollie give or take a few ozs. and Wyatt was the runt of the litter. I haven't seen the other two since I sold them I would absolutely love to see them to see how big they are.

This puppy could stay within the range barely. At almost 2 pounds at 8 weeks you are definitely taking a risk with this one. I would look for one that is healthy and fat and no more than 1 1/2 pounds at 9 weeks.

I agree . . . the dam and sire are always good references in determining size, although you can't be certain for sure.
