I don't think you have to buy a show dog in order to get a dog within the standards. It definitely does help to buy from a show breeder who breeds dogs within the standard though. You can't always be sure, but there's more of a chance to get a dog within the standards if both parents are as well. You could always choose to get a pet quality yorkie from a show breeder, they're not quite as expensive as show dogs.
