Cry Litter Training Problems PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello I have a problem. We started out training Rocky to be litter trained. All was well in the world. He got it after a while and life was wonderful Then Rocky decided that he did not want to use the litter box to pee in????????? We do not know why. Sometimes he will and sometimes he won't. You are in the room that the litter box is in and playing with him and sometimes he pees on the floor and sometimes he pees in the litter box. This happens when we are playing with him or not giving him attention or not. There is no rhyme or reason to it. He can do good for days then say hello to the floor or pee on the floor for days then trot in to the litter box. We put him in there first thing after getting him out of his kennel, after eating, after exercise. We give him treats when he does it right. We tell him no when he does it wrong. We are at our wits end and my wife who is not a big dog fan to begin with (though she does love Rocky) is about at the end of her rope. She says that we had better figure it out soon or else we will have to get rid of the little guy. He is about 5 1/2 months old and because of a hernia he has already been fixed. PLEASE someone help us.

Oh no please don't get rid of him so soon. He is only 5 1/2 months Georgie didn't become fully house trained until he was about 7 months or so. And honestly he still has accidents. Just tell your wife to be patient he will get it and then he won't have accidents anymore. I am sure other people on here can give you more advice. But I am a firm believer in patience and consistency.

I will not give him up. She may want to but I wanted this dog and he is mine. On the other side of this yes I have considered it and I will train him for outside after he is litter trained but I don't want to confuse him. Also Wisconsin winters are to cold for him that is why he is being litter trained for his own enjoyment. I will not give up on him because I also believe in consistancy and patience. Just looking for some relief for my wife. Rocky had it down and he was doing so good and then he just went the other way. My wife thinks there is something wrong with him because of this. I told her it is just the breed and with time and patience he will get it for good soon.

Tell your wife to come on here and search for housetraining she will see numerous posts on it, and find that there is nothing wrong with Rocky. Good luck

Winters in Beloit can't be that much colder than winters in Sugar Grove, we're only 1 hr south of you. Loki goes outside. He likes snow and refuses to come in. If that's your only reason, just outside train him. No matter what accidents at 5 1/2 months are normal, just keep placing him back in the litter box. We never used pads or litter or anything, Loki went outside all last winter and he didn't turn into a popsicle.

just be sure you're leaving the litter box in one place and one place only, away from food and sleeping areas. he's got to learn that there is a place to eat, pee, and sleep.

just BE CONSISTENT.

also, get a coke bottle with a few pennies in it and everytime he pees in the wrong place, just shake that bottle and make a big deal. and dont let him see you clean up his mess. and use something really strong to remove the smell or he'll just want to pee there again.

and try peepeepads. those are really good.

I've had quite a few clients with the exact same problem. So what I have them do is RAISE THE LITTER BOX. Put it on a square frame that raises it off the ground so that your dog-regardless of sex- has to make an effort to actually GET IN the litterbox to go potty. Many of the problems w/ litterbox training-especially males-is simply due to them either A: being lazy or B: they begin to hike their leg. Problem is that their front legs are in the box and the rear legs are out the box...and so on.
So, try raising the litter box as mentioned above and see if that aleviates your problem(s). Just remember that it should be a frame that it rests on and not feet. So that the litter box still remains level and steady when he's in it. And you'll need to eye ball just how high it needs to be raised. More or less just high enough so that he can't just walk in it, he'll need to make a little effort to jump slightly to get in. There you go!

Keep us posted!

We are being consistent always have been. I am also patient and understand that he is still a puppy and not a human and does not associate right and wrong like we do, in the same manner. It just can be frustrating at times. As far as putting the litter box up, do you really think that this will work? We can try it.

I trained my little girl on pee pee pads in the winter and she did good. But as the weather got warmer and I sarted taking her outside more she got used to going outside. She is 8mths old and she now tells me when she has to go out. The only time I have a problem is at night. She still won't hold her poop for the night. So I still put down pee pads at night. It takes time but your little one will come around.I started taking her out every 2 hrs. for the first week, then 3hrs the second and on and on. As long as you keep it up they will learn. Good luck! meeshue

How much of a pee is it, its like 2-4 drops for gods sake.
