As some of you may know I'm getting a pup in 2-3 months depending on when the breeder feels the pup is ready to go home. The Yorkie will be mainly an inside peeing dog, as in it won't be getting walked every time it has to go the bathroom.

I see a lot of people talking about using pee pads and some people using litter boxes. My girlfriend's brother's miniature dachshund uses a litter box and picked it up in a few days. However, this may be totally different for a Yorkie to learn.

What do you feel would be easier to teach and why?

Hi there
My AprilLove is trained to go in the litterbox with a peepad in the litterbox, instead of litter, that way it is contained. I tried the doggy litter, but she preferred to play with that

I started her training at nine weeks taking her in there every 20 to 30 minutes and after naps, playing and eating. She was a little poop and pee machine the first 3 weeks. She is now 16 weeks and has been going to the litter box consistently for almost 2 weeks. I have two litterboxes set up in the house, and she now knows where they both are and goes to the closest one at the time. She will RUN (zoom zoom) to it when she has to poop, it is so cute

I praise her every time she goes, profusely praise her

. I like using the litter box, because there is no chance of leaking off the side of the pad, once they go in there consistently, then it is just a matter of changing the pads. She does not like to have more than two poops in there though, so I make sure it gets changed frequently. I am also using the adult stay at home piddle pads now as they are better at absorbing the odor.

has any one ever tried using one of the cat automatic litter boxes with litter? i have one for my cat and i'm just curious if this would work for a dog LOL not that i have a dog yet. and i probably wouldn't do it myself, but its interesting to know

We would like to litter box train our 12 week old but we've stareted with covering the laundry room floor with puppy pads since he likes to circle and sniff before going. How were you able to get your little one to go when you put her into the litterbox?

I like the idea of using potty pads in a litter box. The litter gets tracked everywhere and also they eat it. The box would keep them from having one foot on the pad and peeing on the carpet and also let them move around while deciding where to go, but stay on the pad. Great idea!

Hi Buster1
I bought the medium sized litterbox for dogs up to 35 lbs at petsmart, It is called Purina Second Nature. I lined it with a jump-start pre-scented (for the doggies) puppy pad and also sprayed some of the spray on it that entices the pups to go (Simple Solutions potty training aid.) Got all of this at petsmart. I would just put her in there quite often and say "go potty" in a pleasant voice and when she did I praised her a lot and treat too. It is a lot of work initially but so worth it!! I bought the bigger sized one so she would have room to circle and sniff out her spot. After putting her in it then I started putting her next to it (the opening part is lower, about 1 inch off the ground) when I thought she had to go and let her learn to step into it herself. (She is still quite small) and just keep saying " go potty"
You know they have to go not long after eating, right after sleeping, after playing for a while etc, those are the most opportune time to put them in there. Now that she is going there on her own, I make sure I can be there when she jumps out and I praise and treat. It took me about 4 weeks to really get a good feel for her elimination patterns (when she poop and pee) and some scheduling of the eating times.
One other thing: when I replace the soiled pads with a new one, I always rub a little of her previous pees on the new pad.
When I am at work she is gated off in part of the kitchen with the litterbox in one corner, her crate/bed in the opposite corner and food/water and toys of course, and she is going always in the litterbox.
That was long and winded, but hope it helps you out!!

PS, you may want to start by slowly taking some pads off your laundry floor and making his pee/poop spaces smaller and smaller until you get to a couple pads, and then introduce the litterbox with a pad in it.

I use the peepad in the litter box and it works great! no messy clean up! I hate litter!

My Natalie is 9 1/2 months old and I have been trying to train her to go outside. She pees outside but still poops in the dining room. She also hates wet grass.

My husband has been on 2nd shift since we got her but now has to go on days. I bought a pen so she won't have to be crated all day and wonder if it is too late to litter box train her so she can go while we are at work. I have a box and pee pads, she ate the litter, but could use any advice. Is it still possible to convert her? Help..

Hi! I just got my pup on Friday and he started going inside the littebox on his own yesterday!! I know i still have alot of work cut out for me..because he is still pretty much contained in the excercise pen.I bought the litter(2nd nature) big mistake..cuz he does try to eat it and its so huge he looks uncomfy. so now its news papers..i will get wee wee pads this week. What do u all do about odor...i can't find info on the pads a poster mentioned.."adult stay at home piddle pads"..they said it helps contain odor..
please help..this stuff is TOXIC!!

P.S. i do the "use previous pee " trick too...i just bought some puppy sent stuff today and will try that out.

Hi,
They're made by Simple Solutions and are called "Stay at Home" for Adult dogs. They have odor neutralizers in them. They work well at containing the pee smell, much bette than the puppy pads do. I got mine at Petsmart

Our yorkie "Rocky" is being litter box trained. He is 23 weeks old and doing well. He occasionally goes through a stage of falling off the wagon but we have dealt with that. He is such a love bug and i am so happy to have him. I am going to get the pads now to use with the litter box we have been using newspaper. Purina second nature litter he eats and then it is hard for him to eliminate so I stopped using that immediately.
