| The breeder I got Hefner from was leary too due to the pregnant woman that was murdered and wouldn't let anyone come over unless her husband was home. I did go over to her house several times, however. She wouldn't give out the address though, and only had one cell phone number that she gave to actual buyers because she was carefully screening the potential buyers through email. Otherwise she would have been completely inundated with calls and not able to handle the important ones. I really appreciated this. Her husband met me in a parking lot near their home and I followed him. The other breeder was from Texas and also did not publicize her phone number. She only gave it out after carefully screening over emails. I spoke to her vet and thought that was the best reference. He was extremely professional and raved about her. He said he had a lot of breeders in his practice...a lot which he wished weren't, but that she was one of his Premiere breeders. This woman also initially refused me as a buyer. I had to convince her that my home was safe place for the puppy. I had the puppy shipped when she was 15 weeks and she did great and we love her to death. I also believe you can tell "in your gut" if it is okay, and just as there is no dog that meets the "breed standard" perfectly, there is no breeder who meets all the criteria for the perfect breeder. Not everyone has the father on the premises for example, but they should be able to see pictures and review the pedigree. JMHO. |

| I totally agree about being careful with the Internet. Maybe I am a little less leary than most people since I met and dated an awesome guy for three years that I met online (the way I met him was a total fluke). I think I am more trustworthy. I don't care if she has the father, but she SAID she did. If I am going to pay $800 for a dog then the breeder should be able to answer my questions, and hopefully screen me before s/he gives me one of her puppies. In short, she can keep her Maltese and find someone else who doesn't mind meeting her in a random place. I want to see the parents and her home/kennel. Also, it's strange that she said "the puppy will have to be shipped". Who wants to ship their puppies if they don't have to? No one on here, I know.

| Kim makes a really good point - I went with my gut on my breeder and haven't had any regrets!

| Now that the picture is bigger, it looks like Sandy & Tia are in little French maid outfits. LOL. They're so cute!

| breeder I would not buy from a breeder who does not allow you to come to their home and see their dogs. I can understand not wanting you to bring strange dogs to their home..but simply looking at a litter and parents will not make the pups sick. You do not have to handle them..I have shown many Yorkies to people by allowing them to look in the playtoom and me holding up the parents and pups. A bit like the hospital an looking at babies..I had a glass door that kept the dogs/people apart..but that was back when there was no parvo vaccine and we were scared to death. Never had a sick Yorkie or pup from people merely looking. BUT if she is a USDA licenced breeder the government has laws about the public in a kennel..do you know those type breeders are not allowed to have breeding stock inside their house..must be confined in a separate kennel..pups also. |
