Question on size fo crate...thanks! Hello everyone! I just found this site and I must say I've enjoyed reading the articles...its been helpful to say the least! We just got an 11 month female Yorkie a week ago. She came with a small travelling crate. The one that is built in hard plastic with small ventilation holes on both sides. There is definitely room for her to stand and turn around, etc. It looks like she is comfortable with it. She would actually go in there and sleep at night (with the front door open). We would leave her there when we go to work for about 5 to 6 hours. My question is...should we get her a bigger crate? The one that is more open. Like a wired crate all around? There will be more ventilation for sure and more for her to see and walk around. My wife says she is used to the travelling crate and we should stick with that. But I feel like giving our Yorkie more space and air. Btw, as far as I am concerned, she is already potty trained. She does not make a mess in her crate and she knows to do it outside. Any advise will be helpful. Thanks in advance!

I have both types of crates. The all wire one for home and a 'vari-kennel' for traveling. I have a medium size vari kennel (not sure on the exact # size) and a small size wire crate, I think #1000. Welcome to YT

I think your Yorkie might be comfortable where she is right now. If she has no problem with it now, she should be okay. Some dogs like small spaces. They feel more secure and switching her to a bigger crate might confuse her. If you're concerned with her not getting enough air, maybe you can switch up during the summertime.

If you leave the crate door open and she has the run of the house, it sounds like you are using this as her "bed", correct? If so, it's probably fine and doesn't need to be bigger. She would probably appreciate the larger crate too and then you may be able to leave her in there longer and feel that she is more comfortable and less "confined".
