| Thanks everyone for your replies. Paddington is crated during the night when we go to sleep for about 6 to seven hours--he starts to scratch at his crate when it gets light outside. During the night he is perfectly quiet. He doesn't soil his crate and pees and poops upon awakening on his pad. We have another dog, a cairn terrier, who is in the mudroom with the puppy during the day. Our cairn has a crate with the door left open but is restrained by a gate to the mudroom; he is eight years old and sleeps during the day in his crate. The space both dogs are in is about 4 feet by 12, with the yorkie in an x-pen with all his paraphernalia at the end with a window. I leave the door to his crate open so that he has access to food, water, toys and the pee wee pad. I will try leaving a TV on and will also leave his kong with some food on the inside of it. I would not feel comfortable leaving him in a closed crate for more than a few hours during the day. I may have to start going home at lunchtime. I've thought about using cloth pads instead of paper. Do you think they are safer? |

| i agree with crating him in a crate just large enough for him. one thing about yorkies is they love company so leaving him for that long, i am sure he is lonely

Going home during lunch is a great idea. It's a great little r&r during a stressful work day. I used to do that too until my mom couldn't resist it anymore and started to take Aggie to work with her. Cloth pads may be a good idea to prevent her from tearing up the pad. But, put some extra toys, i.e. Bully Sticks, Non-edible Nylbones, etc. I even found this treat expenser that you could record a message. Everytime she moves it, it'd say your recorded message. I'd keep them at her size too or else if she couldn't play with it, she wouldn't want it anymore. | |
