Keeley has learned every trick I have taught him...

Sit, Lay Down, Stay, Wait, wave, shake, roll over, turn around, speak, say please, on your back, kisses, watch me, come, go get him/her, go get (then the toy specified), heel, go to your bed, and take a bow

BUT When I tell him to do these tricks he looks at me like "What am I going to get?" And then if he sees it is worth his time he'll do it. Such a brat!

I trained my beautiful terrier mix, who passed away in January, to sit, shake paws (both), lie down, roll over, stay, fetch each of her toys from her toybox by name (she had about 10 different ones) and she could play hide and seek (she'd seek a toy that we hid somewhere in the livingroom). She danced, and did so many other wonderful things. Topher is learning something new just about every week. Repetiton and reward are the key, and it MUST be fun for them. A nice tiny little treat (usually a tiny puppy food cause they're tastier....something they can eat quickly and not get distracted with). He's a smart little fella and has done so well at potty training that I know he'll have fun learning more and more things.

wow- that is sooo am azing- no matter what toy i'm playing with with Oliver I say "get your ball" and he'll go for his toy- whether it be a stick, a football, a sock or whatever- lol I guess it's my fault he can't tell them apart! lol you little terrier was one smart girl. I'm sure topher will be right up there with learning all the neat tricks because you sound like a great teacher!!!!

yeah i wish. romeo does whatever he wants. he is actually in the process of training me! lol.

Tucker does sit and down every time without fail. he's still working on the others though. but he also does some cute tricks that he does every time. such as: roll over, shake, wave, spin etc

Here's what I was taught to help with that. Let your dog see you put your treats on the counter beside you. Standing right beside the counter, ask for a command. Dog performs, praise, give treat. Take a half step away from the counter. Command, praise, give the dog his treat. Move a step away and repeat. Get the idea? Gradually move away from the treats, but still go back and get the treat for him each time he follows the command.

If pup stops following the commands, you've gone too fast. Move back beside the counter, repeat the above, moving away more slowly.

The dog gradually learns that he still gets his treat even if he can't see it. Joey will now happily follow a command for me out in the yard, knowing that I will say "GOOD BOY! Let's go get your TREAT!" and that I will follow through with his treat. Sometimes, I make it more fun by racing him back to the treats!

Carol - I am so glad you posted these again to show what clicker training can do for these little ones. It is so much fun to see Joey do these things and also to see what a happy little guy he is. It reminds me that a picture is like a 1000 words

It's amazing how smart they are...they will remember different names for their toys, I find, if you keep the name short and sweet and repeat the name frequently whenever your pup is playing with it. Topher has bunny, rabbit, ring, bone, rope and after working with him for a few weeks he knows bunny and bone...he's not fetching them yet, but that will come with time, I hope!

My kids love to take an afternoon and try to teach him something new. It was my 16 year old who taught him to sit and she accomplished that in about 5 minutes with his favorite treats.
These guys are pretty smart and I find they LOVE to learn. It keeps them busy and out of trouble!!lol

As far as treats go, after a while they'll love to do the trick (or whatever) without worrying about the treat...they love the praise more than anything. When Topher knows he's done something right he dances around so proud of himself....of course he's probably just reacting to my excitement, but it is cute.
