lucindaw. I would like to know if anyone uses a dog door for their yorkie? Our cockapoos love their door. We were going to install a small one for our new Yorkie, Lucinda Williams Willison, when she gets to 5 pounds. We havea chain linked fence in backyard. We do live near a lake. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to YT. I've talked about getting one, but we don't have a fenced yard, so we'd have to do that first. But I know other yorkie owners that have one, and the dogs love it.

Glad you asked that, I was about to ask the same question. We're planning to get one, just don't know all the right things to look for. We put lattice around our deck, so the boys could go and come there as they please. We don't have a fence so they're always on a leash when they go outside. I'm in Louisiana and in the summer we have misquotes as big as my yorkies, so we gotta try to keep them out of the house. Right now I jus leave the door cracked for them. Any suggestions on good ones, please let me know.

Hi! Welcome to YT! I'm sure you'll be adicted to the site in no time. I don't have a doggy door because we are likely to move soon and my hubby won't let me have one...resale on the house and all that....but I would love to have one once the pups are old enough to know where to go and what they are/aren't supposed to do outside. I think there are some people on here that have ones with a magnetic door. Their yorkies have collars with a magnetic key so it only opens for them. That's the one I would get!

No doggy doors here in my area of MD. A little girl I sold stayed small and had a doggy door that opened into a sunroom that had a hydraulic closure on the outer door which was kept locked. The dorr was opened when they were cleaning and the door didn't close immediately. Little Sophia escaped and was only 10 feet from the door when a hawk flew down and took her. She wriggled free but I ALWAYS warn buyers not to have doggy doors. BTW, they lived in the middle of a housing development near the city..It can happen anywhere..

We have one! Its the best thing we ever did. We have one of the 6 1/2 x6 1/2 cat ones. It has a sensor on it, so it only lets Katy use it. We had to take her to a friends house and let "Roxie" teach her how to use it at first. Now she comes and goes as she pleases. I highly recommend it for anyone as long as your back yard is safe for your little one.

OMG that is scary! Mine would only use one when I am there; and they are 6 & 7 lbs, so hopefully they wouldn't be a target. But...now you've go we worried, we do live in the country. Would you think they would be OK with their weights?? | |

We do not have one, and I don't think we ever would. i don't like them to be outside without someone to watch them. we even have a privacy fence, but you never know when one of the children have left the gate open or various other things that could happen. i just like them to be watched, even when it is cold i go out with them. this leads me to a question that i have, i guess i will start a thread for it.
