Let me start by saying i see your point on you dont have to have alot of money to own a dog . I am not a rich person . But IMO pets are not disposible! Just like children if your child got sick and needed surgery would you just put it to sleep and get a new one? No i dont think anyone would . You have to be prepared for what comes with owning a pet . Rather it is a 1500.00 dollar dog or a mutt from the pound. I am not judging anyone just giving them something to think about. Opinions are like butts everyone has one and this is just mine . What they do is on them . Like you said I don't know them .

God forbid, if Stewie got hurt and it was proven that he would be living a miserable life after surgery, I would definitely have him put down. and that's because I love him too much, not because I would be being cheap about it.

I just hope everything goes well for you no matter what decision you make. I still remember the look on the lil yorkie i saw at pet store, and it took a lot for me to turn around and leave her. Yes hvaing a puppy/dog is a big responsibilty but then sometimes you gotta remember the love and loyalty our pets show us is worth every penny. Its like i said in an earlier thread its up to all pet owners to get the word out on buying from a pet store. No need to constantly remind people they shouldnt have we need to educate people on why they should not.

i know pets arent disposable, i am just as much an animal rights person as any other dog lover BUT there are limits. a lot of you would disagree and thats fine, but i came into dog ownership telling muself that if it comes to an outrageous vet bill where there is no way i could work something out then i would have to put him down, im not saying just put him down because he gets "sick". . . (and what does IMO stand for, i have seen this on other posts too.....). . . furthermore, yes i do treat him like my child, but he isnt, he is a dog (a rather cute dog that is treated like a child and gets whatever he wants...... but a dog just the same), if a child got sick and had an outrageous hospital bill there are ways of paying it (like medicare and other government programs that help or pay it for you) there is no such thing vet bills.... i think to compare an animal to a child is a huge step (i do it with toby sometimes as well) but lets face it, it may seem sorta the same to people like us.... but a dog and a child are something TOTALLY different in the eyes of other people, and when this comparison is given you really have to take a step back and realize that a dog IS NOT a child even though it may feel like it to you. . . . does this mean you are unqualified to have a dog if you are not willing to spend $4000 on it to (not necessarily,) save it? No, it just means that you look at it from a realistic perspective and give yourself a "limit" to how far you will go.... if toby gets sick then i will do everything i can to make him get better, i wont just put him in a cornor to die or put him down, but if it is a losing battle that costs a whole bunch of money, then i would rather spare him the pain and myself the financial burden of having a HUGE vet bill, no way to pay it, and a dead dog anyways. . . call me selfish, that is fine, and this has been my opinion from day one, even my last dog (and i was devastated by her death)

There are limits on what everyone will spend on their dogs care before they have to have it put down. On another forum some lady said she spent 25,0000 in vet costs on her sick tiny yorkie. Now I doubt theres anyone on this forum that would spend that.

$25,000 :eek: OMG that is like 50 times as much as what my fiance paid for his first car!!!

My vote is to take her back... My experience with a petstore puppy was that she didn't live as long as she should have due to a heart condition. It's much easier give back a puppy after having her a few days than to walk out of your vet's office 6 years later, leaving your little one to be put to sleep.

No one should support that pet store anyway! Think of the conditions she must have been raised in. And the poor parents of that puppy, think of how they must be cared for.

Also to the person who says shouldn't have a dog because you can't afford it: if everyone waited to have things until they could afford every aspect and suprise that may come with it, only wealthy people would have children and pets. It's quite unfair and snobby to say that. Animals bring a great deal of happiness into a person's life and people benefit greatly from their companionship. I'm sure you wouldn't deny a puppy to my grandmother who's on a tight budget. Since her husband passed away and finds most of her hours very lonely with no one to take care of anymore.

A couple just starting out with their lives can learn a great deal of responsibility with a little dog as well. Nothing prepares you more for a baby than a little puppy. :D

My vet said if your dog has liver shunt the costs are tremendous alone. Your $600.00 dog turns into a 10,000 dog. It seems high. I have heard on this forum peoples dog's having liver shunt. I would probably have to put my dog down.

orinskye: Enjoy the puppy for a long time! Kids are great but I would love to go back when it was just me and my dog for about 20 minutes out of every day!

I might be backtracking, but again I agree with Orinskye! I am a 20 year old college student working as an Accountant and Graphics Designer. Two jobs and I still have money problems but that did not, in any way, stop be from getting Fred! You really cannot predict what will happen to these little guys so staying away from pet ownership because "they might" get sick will just deprive you of the joy of owning one of these little rascals! :p

And boy oh boy Geanalyn, that really doesn't sound comforting. The pet store must have done something wrong! Shame. :thumbdown
