Are females better to train? I want another yorkie and thought I would get a female. Are they easier to house break and make better pets than males? I am not planning to breed.

My 80 yr old Mother will tell you males are easier too train. My Mum and I have had this discussion for many years and I still don't know the answer. I have a female dog (not a Yorkie) and she wasn't any different than the male dogs I have had over the years. I think each dog is different.

I don't think ALL Yorkies are hard to train. My little male is 4 1/2 months old and he hasn't had an accident in the house in weeks. He goes outside to potty.

Is there anything special your doing with him to make him potty outside? Are you home with him durning the day? Did the breeder have him already trained? That is where a good breeder comes in! Kloey was not trained when I got her, nor had she ever been outside, the lady told me that there were hawks around all the time and she was afraid they would swoop down and get the pups! So now I'm having trouble, but when I'm home in the evening, I do not let her out of my sight, I even put a leash on her in the house if she just in case she wants to go wandering around, but usually when she starts sniffing, I know what she wants, but she will not bark or whine to let me know she has to go out. How can I get her to tell me she has to go potty? | |

Yes I am surprised because at first I thought this was going to take a long time. He is very smart. I am not sure if it is because he is around other dogs. We don't have a fenced yard so we walk our dogs all the time. I swear our Yorkie is copying the other dogs. My hubby laughs when I say this.

I am with him most of the time and I am able to take him to work. The breeder did not have him already trained and when I first got him I was a bit frustrated. At first we were going out all the time and believe me it is so cold here. I never used pee pee pads. When he would have accidents I would pick him up and say outside. I do use a small crate. He sleeps in it at night. In the morning he will go back in it after he has played for about 2 hours. Sometimes he will sleep for 4 hours in the morning. I did worry about this but everytime I check on him he is sleeping. He is up and about mostly all afternoon and evening. He goes to the door and looks up at the door and starts prancing about. He doesn't bark but he makes a bit of a sound. I am not too good at describing all of this but it is working for us.

I do have to ask this question because I see the statement "it is too cold" often. Why do you think it is too cold? I am not trying to be smart here. I have taken our little guy outside from the first day we got him. Even if it was for a minute and straight back in again. Some nights it was -27C which I think is about -16F. He was just around the 2lb mark in weight. I think they get used to it. We would put a little coat on him but he doesn't like his coat so now we take him outside without it. Now he walks for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Males, females potty training I have had Penny since she was 9 weeks old. We live in a motorhome and since the day we got her she has only had 2 accidents on the floor. Maybe I got lucky... I dont know. But from reading all the potty problems, i am amazed how fast penny was trained. Also I think it has alot to do with the breeder, did they start potty training??? I dont know the answer, but it seems like each yorkie or any dog is different.
