but usually when she starts sniffing, I know what she wants, but she will not bark or whine to let me know she has to go out. How can I get her to tell me she has to go potty?
She will start to ask to go potty outside, when she has developed the preference to go on grass and when she fully understands that the entire house area is the den and no where in the house is a potty area. If she is not asking yet, it's because these two concepts are not yet developed or it has 'not clicked' inside her head. But don't worry. Keep doing what you are doing and one day it will click. It's then that she will go to the door on her own. (her way of letting you know she has to potty). She may never bark or whine to go out. Some never do, so you have to develop a way for you to know when she is at the door. (i.e. - bells, or doggie door)
