Does your dog come when called????? I never had a large dog that didn't come when I called it. And, I have never had a small dog that does come when it's called --- unless, it wants to, of course. I finally resorted to "treats" to get my two other small dogs to come in from outside. But, this worked only if they wanted the treat more than they wanted to stay outside. And, believe me - they often wanted to stay outside more than they wanted any treat. I'm working with a whistle on my two dogs now.......and, of course, they get a treat if they come (we have just started). My Yorkie pup who can hear like nothing I have ever seen before - can even hear me pick up the whistle and is right there for his treat. (You know that little pea - that is in some whistles - he hears that if it barely moves.) Carol Jean |
Wow. Are Yorkies supposed to come when called? :lol tears Mine will depending on 1) If they are not busy 2) If they feel like it.3)If they think there's something in it for them ie: treat, hugs, new toy ect. :D |
options my baby agrees with Jan's options as listed above |
mine used to come when called... before he got more comfortable with his surroundings and is starting to act much bigger than he really is. now also agrees with jan's options listed above... #3 has a qualifier...he'll come if he think there's something in it for him ie: treat, hugs, new toy etc. that's better than what he has now, ie: grass, sunshine, pigeon, etc. |
Most of the time indoors but always if out in forest :D |
Jewels rarely comes when she is called. Chachi does come when he is called. |
Yuri comes right away when he is called, but that's becuase he's momma's boy and would rather be with me than running around in the yard. Lain on the other hand will only come if she's decided there's nothing else worth her attention. |
I had obedience lessons with N'Stein and sometimes he listen so well to commands and sometimes he is looking at me with a face saying "are you talking to me". He obey's when he wants to. So Hourra for the Yorkies !!!!!!!! We love then that way. |

LOL I thought the same thing! :lol tears :lol tears |
Bugaboo only comes when called IF he feels like it! |
We went to obedience school mainly for this, Which he did great in class. But now, NO, and when I try to get him, it's a game and he runs. So frustrating! Even when treats are involved he'll come but not near enough that I can get him, or if I reach to touch him... gone! BAD BOY! |
Glad to know I'm not the only one. Some days when I'm chasing Lucy outside it's a good thing I can't catch her because I think I might kill her if I do. I get so frustrated. The one thing I've found for a treat that works more often than not is boiled chicken. If she knows I have that she hardly leaves my side. |

Lain does this too. We call it Catch Me If You Can, she'll let you come within a couple feet, but if you try to grab her, she darts away. Here's my secert for Lain. She will do any thing for the ball and follow it wherever it may go, so I just get one of the many tennis balls lying around, bounce it a couple times, open the back door and toss it in the house. She runs right after her and bang, before she knows it the door is shut and I'm back to drinking my coffee. I'm just as tricksy and she is! :D |

:lol tears That's great. Gonna try it. |
turkey bacon broken into small bites sit in my pocket.....they come when called 99% of the time.....and they don't always get a treat. |
Mine come when THEY feel like it. If it suits their needs. Or if I pick up the keys!! Only way I've ever been able to get them to come when I want them ALL to come at the same time, is to open the door leading into the garage, pick up the keys, and hope like heck I leave the car doors open! Then they're all in the car and I can get one or two out at a time! Suz |
Hah! They only come if its convenient to them and worth their effort! |
LOL at everyone's comments so far ... My OZ is 7 months now ... I tried something I read in a magazine while at the dentist ... I tried it and it really worked ..lol so far :aimeeyork ... Instead of saying "COME" or get your fuzzy ass over here now! I started saying Where's my good boy? the first few times he looked up but didn't come towards me ...so I walked to him and gave him a little bit of turkey breast.... the next few times he met me half way ... and I told him what a good boy he was and gave him the turkey ... Well pretty much from there on out ... ALL I had to do was say Where's my good boy? and no matter what he was up to he broke from it and came running to me ... Worth a try right? |
My gang of three ALWAYS come when they are called...... if and only if...... there is something in it for THEM! We are working very hard on the "come" command so I try to use the come command when I can follow through and "make" them come and when coming is going to be a good thing from their point of view. |
I don't like the unswer in this thread at all :( i hope my yorkie will come when i call him. My biger dogs always do that....inetersting why it's not the same with yorkies. They maybe small but not stupied at all. |
Twinkie usually comes when she's called, but only inside, she wouldn't even hear me if it was outside. She doesn't know "come" but she does come to her name - and I think the only reason she does is because she doesn't want to be left out of anything (I mean Princess chi might get a treat or a car ride without her or something - so she thinks). |
I think the reason that many of our Yorkies don't come when called is that they are not really trained to come. Yorkies are very independent and sometimes they are a challenge to train. I take sole responsibility for my furkids lack of responsiveness. My three are all very intelligent and are perfectly cabable of learning to obey any and all commands if I would take the time for some serious training. LOL |
My pom will come when called and I take her outside in the nice weather and she just sits in the shade while I garden. I did work with her when she was younger but I still think it's in the dog. Cali on the other hand will only come if I call Maya and that's inside. Today for the first time i put Cali on her harness and a leash and took her in the backyard, she ran so fast I had to beet feet to catch her! All of my Yorkies have been runners! |

Tucker comes about 90% of the time when called. He comes 100% of the time that I rattle paper and say "Want Some" |
If I call their names, NO!!! If I call "COOKIE" Yes!!! LOL But I'm working with Bell and she does come sometimes!! |
Baby comes when called. I just say, "poo poos" in a high pitched voice, and she comes running. :D |
No !!! Only when she wants to !!! |
Out of my three, only one will come when called Maddie, she will stay right by you in the front yard and would even walk around the block with out a leash. Now Rudy and Polly are a whole different story. Rudy is a runner and Polly is the same. In the back yard, I can get Rudy and Polly in by saying treat and they come a running. After reading all the post like every one has said it must be a yorkie thing. |
Hope comes, but sometimes I have to use my "stern" voice - maybe I should switch to "get your fuzzy ass over here now" :p LOL - just kidding - think I will use some of the excellent suggestions made so far. |
