Thank you all so much for your replies!!!! It is obvious that the general consensus is that they come -- but only if they feel like it. Not one of the small dogs in my neighborhood will come when they are called. The owners are always out doing everything in the world to catch them.....we all pitch in all the time. BUT - the larger breeds come in a second..they have done it since they were puppies and never even needed to be trained to do so. ********* Anyway (in the house) I am working with a whistle and "chicken." My house is large and no matter where he is - he comes like a little bullet when I blow the whistle. Summer is coming and we'll soon be going outdoors - this is why I'm working hard to train him now. I sure hope it works when we go outside. I'm a little afraid though that some of the squirrels and quail, etc., around here will be far more enticing to him than a piece of "chicken." But we will soon find out. Carol Jean Thanks again for so many replies. |
Guinness comes right away.. |
:eyetearss :rollingey :angel2dl: :lol tears :bravo: :littleang This is a cute one Carol Jean. Congratulations on your new training techniques. Sounds about right to me. Kips obedience training really means, "come running, flip over, roll, and play peekaboo out of the corner of her eyes" until she gets her treat. The 'sit' thing is a waste of time to her...she knows I'll cave in and give her the cookie anyway. |
My little girl never comes to me when i call her. When she was little she would run from me and when i caught her i would rub her belly and say good girl. I know that sounds un orthadox but now she never runs from me when i call her she will lay down and roll over on her back waiting for me to rub her belly. I guess when i say Sassy come her she associates that with a belly rub, hehe. She is a brilliant little dog and knows about 17 tricks but i could never teach her to come!! Melinda and Sassy Little |
HAHA I am so glad i read this thread ..i would of got all flustrated with my baby ..but shes just being a Yorkie ,,,hahahaha And she does Sit ..giggles ..if she feels like it! |
snickers comes even in a whisper.....I was downstairs in the bathroom and kids were asleep so I whispered....snickers...and boom there he was! He always comes. |

That made me smile :) I was wonderin what kind of trickster I was when I throw Pennys toy inside the doorway, now I know Im not the only one... It is truely the only way to get her inside, food does not work, treats do not work, and she can out run me all day long... |
Coco comes to me, yea when he does feel like it...or when he feels that I'm being 'nice.' He just follows me around more than he listens when I give him 'commands.' Of course, when I have a treat in my hand..he does listen...but I don't want him to be doing that and getting spoiled by the treats. |
In my world............ Mitzi calls, and I come running!! LoL! |

Well I worked on this last night for about 20 mins. I had to put on his leash, which he still will not come right up to me, and when I give him slack, he'll come up, but when you go to pet, or touch him, he backs up. It is so frustrating. And without a leash forget it. On a brighter note. I did teach him to shake, I tried that thinking if he'll let me shake his hand, he'll have to come. SO we got the shake down. Take the training leash off,, no come, so can't get close enough to shake. UGHHH! Is it just me?? |
Baxter will only come when called when he A) feels like it B) when there is a treat involved. By the way, wanna bone works well for me when they won't come in C) when I call my cocker spaniels name after trying to catch Baxter. He likes to be the center of my world and wont let the cocker come between us. Works every time! :D |

It's the dogs fault honest. Before we got her, my other half used to poke me to see if I was breathing :) You are FUNNY!! I'm just telling dog stories, I guess that makes Mitzi the funny one :D |

Gracie comes when called...except when she sees me holding the hair brush. Rebel comes when he feels like it. Drives me nuts! Woodie comes to his name and London runs away when she hears hers...little toot! |
Zeus will come when called, unless there is a better option! :p And there usually is as far as he's concerned!! |
I found that their nosiness is stronger than their hardheadedness! If they won't come and I pretend to have something really interesting they'll come just to see what I have. If all else fails I call one of the big dogs and they follow them. I don't really have to call them often because they are usually right up my butt! :p |

Wow Kimberly, I did not realize you have 4 yorkies . . I am envious! I am getting a second one hopefully soon and already I am scared I might not do a good job at pleasing everyone (Tiger and the new memeber when she arrive and my hubby) and still attend to my daily chores. What is your secret????? |
It's not just a yorkie thing. It's a terrier thing in general. I've owned many terriers in my day and they ALL have been stubborn and bad with the come command unless there is a treat in it for them. You just have to work that much harder with terriers is all. |
Oversharer -- It's not a "terrier thing." It's a "small dog" thing. I would like to think it is only terriers, but in my neighborhood and among my friends, we have a PooPom, a Maltese, a daschund, a Yorkie, a Pom, and a couple other small dogs. Not one of them comes when you call them. They do turn around and look - but then just go on doing whatever they want to do. And, as I mentioned earlier - everyone that has a large dog (larger breed) calls them and they run right to them. And - I want to add - not one of them trained their dogs to come....they have just all done it since they were pups...never a problem! Go figure! My pup (6 months old) got out the front door tonight (on his own) for the first time. And - because there were so many people coming in - he just followed them - thank God! I can see me out chasing my dog in the dark. He's a dark color and doesn't show up!! Carol Jean |

Then again, we could both be wrong! Dogs never fail to surprise. :) |
Toto comes if she wants to, if she thinks there's something in it for her or if she's closeby and happens to be walking toward me anyway!! ;) |
K.C. is never more than 1 foot from me and follows me everywhere I go. On the rare occasion if I look down and he's not at my feet, on my desk or on my lap, I get a little nervous and call to him and he comes running back! |
Gracie only comes to: "Did you miss momma?" when I say it in a high squeeky voice and "Get your butt over here before you get into trouble" ... that one makes her come running!!! |
With our 2 Yorkies, they are not pampered. We give them love and pet them but we don't "pamper" them. We don't do things when they ask. We do things for them when they've done something; i.e., sit, down, etc. Even if they want to be petted, I tell them to "sit". Then I will pet the dog. If you want your dog to come, you have to start out using a leash to teach it. You put your dog in a sit position and walk to the end of the leash and say the dog's name & "come". You praise the dog every step it takes. If the dog doesn't move toward you, just give a slight tug on the leash. ;) Practice and consistency is the name of the game in training your dog. Don't ever give a command if you think the dog isn't going to obey it. :thumbdown We never take our dogs out to go potty or for a walk without a leash. If the dog is too involved in something, don't ask it to come to you. Go get the dog yourself. If you know it won't come, then don't ask it to come. All this works for us. ;) Good luck - always keep working with your pet at learning new things. It's good for bonding. It all isn't just about pampering your pet. ;) |
[QUOTE= Don't ever give a command if you think the dog isn't going to obey it. :thumbdown [/QUOTE] LOL :D Well I guess we all need to stop calling them because we know they aren't going to obey. Oliie is just a baby so she comes now when I call her but not when my husband does. Our late Yorkie, Sparky, would come if she wanted too or if I used the "come here right now" tone of voice, well most of the time anyway. sometimes nothing worked. Isn't that why we love them, for their spirit? |
Most of the time he does but if I call him for a bath or bed time he runs with his tail between his legs and hides and we have to catch him! |
Only if there is something in it for her. |
