Ana, do the British Isles still have that long quarantine time when you bring a dog there?

The thing about Alabama ... for example ... when we first met our best friend, Mike who lives in Chicago, Illinois, he was just fascinated with us! He finally shared with us after getting to know us well enough, that most people from the North thought that everyone down South were still kinda like they were portrayed in "Civil War" movies! Poor, ignorant people! He was amazed and after his first visit South, especially the mountains, just fell in love with this part of the country! Just goes to show him "don't believe everything you hear"!!

I think I remember Junebug took Otis on a plane, and took him out of the carrier when the flight attendants weren't around. They are so small that if they don't make a peep, they should be just fine hanging out in your jacket or something.

I am what is known as a dyed in the wool Yankee who lived in the mountains of North Georgia (that's next to Alabama, Ana) during the turbulent 60s. My Yankee family and friends simply did not understand much of what went on during that time! And while much of what happened in the south -- and the NORTH -- during segregation was not right, the North and the Yankee liberal press portrayed the south in a highly discriminatory and unrealistic manner!!! It made me furious! And I'm a Yankee liberal!!!! The south is a very lovely, genteel place. Does it have white trash and rednecks? Yup. AND SO DOES THE NORTH.....THEIR VERY OWN BRAND!!!! But the vast majority of Southerners are the most charming and wonderful people you will ever meet, and the south is a very beautiful part of our country. Y'all hear? PS Of course we Mainers think they talk funny.......

I'm learning a lot about the USA now!! My geography of even the UK is not good and of course i know nothing about peoples' attitudes towards different parts etc - sounds silly to me!! Suppose we do it here too but no-one should ever generalize should they?!! Re taking dogs out of the country - within Europe we have a complicated system - dog passports- all dogs have to be microchipped, blood tests, rabies shots etc etc and a lot of red tape. Dread to think if we wanted to bring one over to the USA - think quarantine still exists then, quite sure actually - poor doggies!! Ana xx

| Thanks for those kind words ... I graduated from high school in '61 ... I saw that "Freedom Bus" burn in Anniston, Alabama and it broke my heart!! My parents raised us to show respect regardless of race or circumstances ... and the quickest way to get in BIG trouble in our home was to disregard any of these teachings!! I raised my children the same way and today as I observe them raising their children this way and I cannot tell you how completely successful it makes me feel!! They are also animal lovers like me ... Amanda once saved a tiny kitten that fell in a bucket of water and everyone else thought had drowned! Just grabbed that baby up ... put her mouth on it and kept blowing until it started breathing again!! I believe that I received my love of animals from my Grandfather whom I adored! He owned Fox Hounds and it was so amazing that he could tell each "voice" when they were running after fox in the woods!! He also cared for them as he did his children! I never had the opportunity to thank him for learning from him as he died in an auto accident 51 years ago [I was 10] and I still miss him after all this time but am thankful I still have all the great memories! Yep! Southerners are pretty "special" people!!

Our vet, Dr. Lucy, always tells us that if we ever need to board her that she will take Toto to her home [she also raises Yorkie show dogs]! I know there couldn't be a better place on earth for Toto if she isn't with us ... but ... I don't know if we could bear to leave her, even with our vet!!

Isn't it funny what your grandkids call ya? My first grandchild, who will be 20 in October (!!!) couldn't say "Grandma" when she was little. It came out "Menah", so I have been "Menah" to ALL 9 of my grandchildren, EXCEPT the darling little last one, who is 3. She is the only one who calls me "Grammy." None of them knew their real grandfather, as he died in 1988. The two oldest (18 & 19) remember my second husband as their grandfather and they dearly loved him. It was Herb's wish to be cremated and taken to the four corners of the earth when he died in 1995, so each of us in the family has a little of Herb. When I took his ashes to my oldest grandkids in Kentucky, I flew out of Montreal. Well, it is highly illegal to cross borders with "remains", so I put some of Herb's ashes in an empty Skippy peanut butter jar with the label still on it to get him past customs. That jar resides on a bookshelf in my daughter's living room, discreetly behind a book, and every once in awhile they all get him down and reminisce about all the great times we had together! Now they call him "Skippy." And I just KNOW he is up there laughing his head off! Last edited by Higgin's Mom; 08-08-2004 at 06:28 PM.
