| Barking question I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I was just wondering if there was anyway to train puppies not to bark? I pick my puppy up tomorrow, so I'm not sure if she will even be a big yapper. Just wondering for future reference.

| I instructed my family right away, NO Barking! When they are little and their bark is so cute, you are tempted to encourage barking. Resist the temptation and you will be pleased with a quiet little dog. Our dogs bark when the door bell rings, trash trucks, dogs barking on TV. But we say 'ssshhhtt' and they will stop. Sometimes I say 'ok enough'. Always, always discourage it. I let them bark at each other playing for a little, but it became such a distraction. Now they rough house, sometimes they growl a little, but seldom bark. My friends always comment how quiet they are, it makes me very proud.

| I trained my puppies by putting some pennies in a coke can and everytime they started to bark, I would rattle the can. They didn't like it very much and they would stop barking. Now, none of them bark unless there are strangers at the door. Hope this helps.

| I do also use a water squirt bottle sometimes, usually when they all decide to surround the cat and bark!

| I am glad someone asked that question. My husband thinks its cute. Now if I go in the other room and she is in her playpen area and she starts barking what do I do then ? Which Zoey does. I am gonna try the can idea. ALso the biting when my husband plays with her he lets her bite, no good either right ???

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I agree we never encouraged the barking even we they were little and now we have pretty quiet dogs...they only bark at the common things...birds, the doorbell, loud noises but defintely not all the time!! We just tell them to calm down or thats enough and they know for the most part to stop and move on!!!
