The dog will get used to what you provide. Tatum is never lacking for attention or playmates when we are home. If the only people that owned dogs were the ones that didn't work, there would a lot less pet owners in the world.

I say if that's your only problem, you have to know yourself if between you and your husband, ya'll can give the dog the attention it needs. I have a MIL that has strong opinions about things that are none of her business and know how that can be. If you are the ones giving this dog all of it's care and do not live with your mother, then it has to be your decision. If there are other factors we don't know about, then I guess that may change things.

Yes I would be upset too if people critized me and assumed things about my love for my furbaby, however i haven't seen that yet in this post thank god. Sounds like your baby is well taken care of but I am still of the opinion that a new baby being alone in a crate for 6-7 hours a day is just too long. I have a friend whom adopted not one but two little furbabies and now goes to work for 8 hours everyday. I've even offered to go over myself for the first month or so and let the furbabies out to pee and play with them but she said no, that they would be ok. Maybe this does sound like criticism but in all honesty it's my genuine opinion on what's best for a new furbaby. I think that's what this forum is all about, opinions and advice and hopefully it's all done in a respectful manner. Thanks for taking the time to read this

My mom always made it really simple. As long as I lived in her house, I had to follow her rules!!

And it worked in reverse when she came to live with me for a short while.

I'm not saying I'm seeing it in this post either. It's just something I've seen before and some people have strong opinions on leaving a dog alone for any amount of time. Luckily when Tatum was very young, we were living with my MIL while building a new house so if my husband couldn't be home every 2-3 hours to tend to Tatum, then my MIL did that for us. And just as I say that my MIL can be a pain sometimes, I have to also say that she was the one who urged us to go ahead with our desire to get a new puppy after our poodle passed away. I didn't think I should at first because of it not being our house and all that but she gave us her blessing and so Tatum was "hers" also her first year.

At 16, I might have felt differently, but I can certainly say now that the older I got, the smarter she got!

in your senario, it looks like you're expecting your mom to commit to long term care for your yorkie. she'll be taking care of YOUR yorkie 4 days a week! and you're assuming she'll have the time and want to do that for your yorkie on top of the 5 dogs and 2 cats she already has in her home. maybe she has other ideas for her time and she feels that as an adult with your own home, you should handle the responsibilities of owning your own dog rather than be dependent on her to care for the dog in your stead.

besides, if she comes over to your place to babysit your yorkie, that means she'd have to leave her pets at home by themselves for most of the week and she doesn't want to do that. if you let your mom take the yorkie to her home 4 days a week, then maybe your yorkie will become attached to your mom rather than you and you'll lose your yorkie!

i'm just speculating on this, but i think it would probably be best if you get a kitty first since they're lower maintenance and see how it goes from there. with a kitty and a sugar glider, your home will have a couple of spoiled furbabies already!!!

Yeah Sherry Lynn, mom's are like that. I so did not want a puppy when Megan got Bandit. I knew we were not home enough. Well, it turned out fine. Bandit, and now Tucker, slept alot during the day. I'm home two days a week and he sleeps all day! One thing is someone has to let them out every 2 hours or so if you ever want to potty train. But other than that there is no reason you can't have a yorkie even if you work. And it sounds like someone will be there more than many working parents are able to. If your mom's only concern is that the yorkie will be alone for a few hours at a time, she doesn't need to worry. This is all assuming that you are not living with her.

I agree - when you are living with your parents (or your mom) -- it's her home, and you should respect her wishes. You are very fortunate that you have a mother that will let you and your husband stay with her. All the more reason you should go out of your way to please her.

Remember when you get your own place - then you can do whatever you want ---within reason, of course!!! Sounds like both of you are working, so it shouldn't be too long before you can find a place of your own.

Hate to tell you, but it is a lot of work raising a yorkie pup when you work full time. I have to admit, I spent all of my time after work training my yorkie pup and playing with him. They require soooooooooooooooo much attention as pups (and as adults but not as much!). It was not easy by no means. It was quiet stressful too for both my husband and I. Potty training takes a lot of patience and time on your part. Training is HUGE since these little yorkies think they are the bosses! Good luck. I'm sure you and your mom will make the right decision.

I did not realize what I was getting myself into when I got Stomper. I would not take it back, but raising a puppy while working full time is not easy!

it is fine!!! Not everyone who has a yorkie can be a stay at home moomy. me and my boy friend work 8 hours a day and he stays in the kitchen while we are not there!

y is it every thing i post ppl start critasizing me! no matter what ppl say i dont know what i am doin and stuff ! i am sick of being treated as tho i dont know what i am doin and that i shouldnt even own a dog ! i ask to talk to working yorkie moms not ppl who have the pleaser of staying home ! i wanted advice from ppl that have to work and how they handel work and there baby ! i dont work a 8-5 job ! i work diff time all the time ! some days she wont even be home alone at all ! and other day it will only be for about 4-5 hours!! !! all u ppl seam to be hooked on is ifi am livein at home and stuff ! i have already said that this is not now its goin to be in a few mounths when i move out !

TNK - I re-read the posts and don't think anyone has been critizing you. Your initial post asked for advise and that is all people have been giving you. I really think the posts have been friendly with a lot of good advise and a lot of sharing of information and experiences.

When you move out of your mom's house, you can get your Yorkie -- and, your mom can help you with it -- but, only if she wants --- it does sound like there are already a lot of pets in her house for her to care for.

I babysit my daughter's dog occasionally when they go out of town, etc. But, I couldn't manage it on a steady basis. I love her dog and enjoy having it once in a while, but it is a lot of extra work for me - especially since I already have two dogs of my one.

If I were you, I'd wait until I get a place of my own and then figure out how to care for my little dog without my mom's help. It certainly can be home alone some. Many of us work and have to leave our pets at home - and it's works just fine.

Remember when you ask for advise and people give advise - you're going to hear all sorts of different opinions. And a lot of the responses you are getting are to other people's posts - not directly to you.

Again - I haven't seen any criticism -- just a lot of different opinions and advise. Don't let a lot of different opinions bother you.
