| FLEAS!! Please help Hi! My 3month old puppy yorkie might have fleas! . She was OK until my Dad let her go outside in the grass (doh!). For the past two days her scratching/biting has increased. I looked around the forum for flea medication and found "Advantage" and "the stuff your vet gives you to put on the dog's shoulder blades." -- But Petsmart doesn't have these I've searched through her coat to find fleas. Nothing. I did however find the sediments that look similar to 'dirt' -- they're kind of a grayish color. I also tried the flea test on white paper but that didn't work either. I think I'm going to just take a precautionary measure and buy some flea medicine b/c she is going to the vet on Friday (earliest date I could get). Please suggest one of the following: (links to PetSmart flea products) http://www.petsmart.com/global/brows...=1139936900263 Thanks |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | You can buy advantage and frontline from your vet. I haven't had much luck with over the counter products working. If you try one, do NOT use Hartz products.

| You could try the biospot stuff. I just get my flea meds at the vet.

| Bathe her in Dawn dishwashing liquid, that should help with the fleas. I think 3 months is too young for the topical flea stuff ??????

| Go to the vet before doing anything. It might not be fleas. It might be allergies.

| OK. I did try the Dawn thing already, although I didn't bathe her in it, I just kinda spread it over her bed and put a little on her coat. I don't want it to affect her skin. I -am- seeing the vet on Friday for a check-up, but was wondering if I should take the precautionary measure of getting her some flea medication now before she irritates her skin too much. I suppose I'll have to wait til' Friday |

| I wouldnt get it now if you are going to get it from the vets that would be too much.

| I really don't think the "Dawn detergent" is supposed to be used as a flea repellant (I really don't understand you putting it on her bedding and on her)... Anyway.... I think you should at least bathe her in the Dawn or a flea shampoo or you are going to have fleas all over the house if that is what she has.... Hope all goes well with her.

| Yes Friday! I'd rather take her to this vet because I trust him. I did call two other places nearby but they are "walk in" and i don't want Kiwi to get scared of the other dogs in there. It wouldn't be bad if waits weren't 30-45mins. Ahh, and I put the Dawn Soap on her bed, but she hardly ever sits/sleeps there. I'm bad and let her sleep in my bed. Hehe. Is it OK to bathe her again today even though I gave her a bath yesterday? I used regular dog shampoo. Last edited by dean29; 02-14-2006 at 10:21 AM. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I didn't think of this earlier but if it seems your pup is scratching her ears, it may be ear mites, not fleas. Also some animals are very sensitive or even allergic to fleas. Just one will drive them nuts. One of my cats is super sensitive and will actually scratch sores on his neck, even though we don't "see" fleas on him. Be sure you are rinsing ALL the soap off your pup when you bath her. If you don't when it dries on their skin, it'll make them itchy too. I use advantage on my pets. It's wonderful. I only use 1/2 the dose on my yorkie, and that works fine.
