| Getting a new puppy! Hello everyone! I'm going to be the pround new owner of my first yorkie puppy. She's a little girl and her name is Illy. I can pick her up on Feb. 18th and I'm very excited. I'm new to this site and I wanted to get some input about becoming a new yorkie mommy. I also wanted to know how to go about the car ride home with her. The ride will be 8 hours and I'm not sure what to do with her or how often to stop for potty. If anyone has any input please let me know. Thanks! |

| I have a long ride to go get my puppy as well...but I have to wait until March I was thinking since the crate training book I got said to take them potty about every hour...that is what we would do for her on the way home. It won't take us much to just pull over and let her jump out. I bought her a harness and a leash so that we could walk her around and she would be safe. That is how I am going to do it...but I would like to know if anyone has already been through this. I was told by another member to make sure I bring extra blankets for her crate in case of an accident. Also a paper towels and plastic bags for clean ups!

| Welcome! You have def come to the right place for advice on yorkies!!! I would agree that about once an hour is good for stopping. However, if your new puppy is not fully vaccinated, I would be cautious about where to take her to potty. This is just my opinion and I sure there are others with much more experience than me in this matter. I would not feed her during this trip, although be sure to have some nutrical with you! That is a long ride for a little furbaby, but you do not want her to have food in her tummy in case she gets car sick! Someone suggested this to me, and it worked amazingly well, but if you buy a water bottle that is designed for a hampster or other small rodent, you can hold it for your baby and they can get a little bit of water while in the car but not too much at once and it wont spill in the car. I hope at least some of this helps!
