| Crate problems We have been trying to crate train our 11 week old Yorkie. We have had her for 3 weeks. She have been teaching her to go outside to potty or do #2. She does good when we are there and she is out of her crate. Unfortunately, she has gotten into the habit that when we take her out, she will only pee. Then when we put her in the crate and go to work, she does #2. We do not leave her in there all day. I come home at lunch time to find this every day. She is basically in there 4 hours or so at a time. We bought her from a somewhat large breeder. I have read that if the puppy learned to live in its own mess from the beginning that it is extremely difficult to teach them not to. I am so tired of washing blankets --- Can someone please help? Has anyone had this problem before? |

| Unfortunately, that is what we were told too. However, it is not working. I am concerned that she is trying to "get back at us" for putting her in the crate. We are going to try and purchase a baby gate this weekend and see how she does. We have tried to get her to use the potty pads, but so far no luck. I guess we'll keep trying. Thanks for the advice. |

| When my Yorkie was a baby, he would #2 in his crate all the time. I thought he would never "get it". After he got a little older, we started to block him off in our laundry room. He would #2 in there too and then play with it and eat it <YIKES>. In time, he has learned to better control his bowels and I only find a mess very infrequently. It took a good year for him to learn, though. I cleaned up a lot of smooshed poo in the meantime.

| My puppy has just turned 14 weeks. I have been crate training so he will go outside. He did do a few poos at first in his crate but he has not done any in over a week. We get up in the morning very early and he goes pee outside. We come back in then out again he does his poo. Sometimes we noticed we had to stay out longer till he did his poo. It is very cold here, -15 but he is getting the idea. We have play time then he goes back in his crate. I have noticed he has been able to go longer until lunch time just this week. It seems to take 2 trips out when he wakes up. I find if I keep him to a routine it is getting better everyday. |

A 14 week old Yorkie cannot hold it for 4 hours. Things will improve as she gets a little older. In the meantime it is cruel to leave her in there longer than she can hold it (and I'm a huge supporter of crate training, but only when done correctly). Try the baby gate and just ignore the mess until she is old enough to be put back in the crate for 4 hours. Is there any way you can take a few days off to work with her on this? Or at least stay home all weekend and just work on potty training. You need to wait for her to poop outside and then praise/treat her like crazy. Do this a few times and she'll start to get the hang of it. Expect accidents for the next 3-6 months. Also, don't confuse things with pads - that just teaches them it's OK to potty inside and then you go and change the rules and it's not OK any more. That's confusing. It's either OK or it's not, you need to choose one and commit. Loki pooped in his crate 4 or 5 times when he was that age. He pooped and peed on the floor all the time, even while we were watching him! After a while we learned how to predict or tell when he needed to go. A few months later he learned how to tell us he needed to go. Dogs just want to make us happy, and if we show them what we want from them they will do it. Loki is totally housetrained now, even with all of the setbacks we had in the beginning. You just have to patient and consistent.
