Question ... Think I know the answer though

Here is a clip from an email I got today. I have been searching for a Yorkie for my family...but do not want to ship unless I fly with it. It seems like a tough start for a little baby...
So I have started my search pretty locally... I heard about a lady...I thought she was a hobby breeder.. but here is a snippet from her email..
"I also want to let you know that we are not breeders--we get puppies from quite a few breeders, and most of the puppies go to out of state homes in large metropolitan areas where finding quality puppies can be quite difficult"
That sound like one of the red flags for puppy mills or brokers, right? I'm so disheartened...She was the closest I contacted..
Ah well...
The search continues

Have you tried the www.ytca.org site for clubs/breeders close to you? or the site www.breeders.net has a zipcode search which may help. best of luck.

Now I'm on the breeders.net and I'm seeing things like..."If I don't have the puppy you want, I can get it." Doesnt that sound like a broker? I will get there eventually, wont I? And have the perfect dog...who chews on my stuff...and then pees on the good stuff... Right?

I have never been on Breeders.net so I went and looked. In my area , there were 16 breeders listed.Only one that I know of and would buy a puppy from, I did look at the other ads that had websites and/or pics. You just need to be careful when screening their ads I think.
Can you maybe travel to a neighboring state? I know of an excellent breeder in Texas, where friends have bought puppies. She did ship them and they both arrived in fine shape. And they were further than you are.

You have to be careful wherever you look and I would steer clear of anything worded that way. The site www.iupui.edu/~ihls400/responsible_breeder.html has a good collection of articles on what to expect from a responsible breeder and the site www.buyingapuppy.com has a good list of questions to ask. Be sure to visit before you go to pick up a pup and be prepared to answer a lot of questions. A good breeder will ask them. You may also want to contact vets in your area for breeder referals, they generally know the good, bad and ugly about breeders in the area. Best of luck.

My vet declined to refer. He is awesome..but he is pro- rescue what's already there..Which I did twice...now I'm wanting more...I can tell you he has awards all over his office from the president,etc...and he is super nice to our pets but is not inclined to help "spread" the animal population......Which I agree or I wouldn't have the pets I have, but I grew up with champion blood line show dogs....Not mutts and I'm ready for a "Baby"...

Ok, so here I go again with the stupid questions. Puppy mills? Are they as bad as they sound. Forced breeding to get more pups? Am I on the right track here? I had no idea that Yorkies were such big business.

puppymills are horrible places where there is no reguard to the dog's lives at all. They are stuck in a cage where their main purpose in life is to breed. There can be up to hundreds of dogs living in small wire cages, they aren't given much medical attention, they are poorly groomed, and they poop/pee where they sleep. It's horrible.

It sounds like that person IS a broker. STAY AWAY! Brokers usually partner up with puppymillers so that the work of advertising and selling for top dollar is done by another person #2 so that the location and the illegal acts of the puppymill can be withheld. Find a local breeder that you can visit with and talk to about their breeding program. Make sure you know what to look for. I remember when I first started I had ran across a broker in Missouri, the puppymill capital of the world. A good breeder does all of the right tests on the puppies and puts their heart and soul into breeding. They only choose the dogs that meet the standard and have waiting lists so they don't need to advertise often.
I wanted to add that a good breeder would want to screen the potential parents THEMSELVES. They would want to be positive that their beloved puppies were going to wonderful homes. They wouldn't depend on some lady they were paying to do that. Only people who breed LOTS of dogs(puppymillers) can afford to pay a broker. I don't know one person on YT that uses a broker.

I gather the mommas and poppas spend their whole little lives in cages....They breed... That is it... I saw a site that showed a momma dog infested with just about everything, rotted teeth, malnurished....alll cause she was just a breeder doggie...over and over and over..
And yeah, I've been looking at every legit dog imaginable and have seen them for $1000-$3000. I've seen lower and higher prices...but this seems about average. Keep making the puppies and selling them to people who are either ignorant about puppy mills or don't care. That's what they do.. I will not participate and be part of the "demand" that helps it continue.
