I didn't like yappy dogs either and I used to think Yorkies were little dust mops. But all the yorkies I'd had seen were not taken care of and did look like dust mops. My daughter wanted to get another dog and wanted something small she could handle. She started to like Papillions. I ran into a drug rep. at work and she traveled with her yorkies. She would leave them in the car when she came in to the drs office to distribute her stuff. She asked if I wanted to see them and I fell in love. I talked my daughter into getting a yorkie and it has been history since. I want another one sooo bad!! But can I have enough love for 2?? I don't want to give Starsky any less love than I give him now. They have great personalities and I think they are the closest dog to being a human!

My sister got a yorkie and named him Rhett Butler. Rhett was the sweetest little dog I'd ever seen. I was his favorite and they couldn't even say my name around their house because he'd just go wild with excitement. I got to babysit him whenever they traveled and that was quite often. I loved those times! He could even say, "I love you!" We'd say, "I love you Rhett," and he'd say, "Ra Ruv Roo!" We had to get him put to sleep a few years ago and he is truly missed. I still cry about him now and then and know my sister does too. My sister called Rhett, Yorkie Extraordinaire! That he was! So, Rhett is why I became head over heels in love with the Yorkie breed!

After having my Maltese for about 1 year, my husband and I decided we wanted another dog but wanted to get a different breed. We wanted a dog that was small like Tuffy but absolutely did not want another white dog. I had always liked the look of Yorkies but what really made my decision was talking with someone on my Maltese forum who had a Malt and a Yorkie. She had the best advice and her recommendations helped me find a Yorkie breeder. If it weren't for her descriptions of her own Yorkie I might have passed them by. I'm so glad I didn't because Pixie is just the best little doggy, I wouldn't trade her for the world.

This may sound strange.....

I saw my first Yorkie (in person) about 10 years ago - and haven't seen one since. This is true true true!!!!

I never forgot that little Yorkie, and from then on, in the back of my mind, it became a little dog that I have always wanted to own.

Of course, the one I saw was seven years old and weighed about 3 pounds. And, now the one I have is probably going to be 7 or 8 pounds......but just as loveable and wonderful and still very small.

Hi and welcome to YT!! Great story and congratulations on your new addition. Your wife is a lucky woman. Sorry to hear about the loss of your first yorkie. We are looking forward to seeing pictures of both.

We had a Yorkie-mix, Fluffy, growing up. She was the cutest, smartest, funniest little dog ever. She would sing and dance, she was the closest thing to human...so cool. We never knew what she was mixed with, she was just a beautiful, golden long-haired dog, until I saw Jamie Lynn Spears on the cover of my daughters magazine with her golden long-haired dog that looked just like Fluffy and it was a Yorkie-Poo. I always knew Fluffy had Yorkie in her but now I know she was a Poo too. After Fluffy was gone I saw a lady at the post office with a Yorkie and I told my Mom that I was going to have one of those little ones someday.

it all happened one day in boston common about 2 years ago...we would go there and play with all the dogs and just dog watch all the time, then on one particualr day, there had to have been a dog playdate because there were at least 15 dogs and i was in dog heaven. there was a little yorkie girl following her owner around like a shadow and i just wanted to squeeze her- she had her hair in pigtails and was soooo adorable.. i asked the owner what kind of dog she was and the rest is history. i knew from that second on i wanted a yorkie and was determined to learn some more about them. i originally thought i wanted a "teacup" but someone led me in the right direction and let me know that there really isnt such thing, and that they are more suceptible to health problems, etc. needlesstosay, im so glad we went to the commons that day<3<3

I had a friend called Jodie, she had a miniture yorkie called "Chloe", she was the cutest thing I had ever seen. When ever she used to escape her Mom's house, little Chloe would walk up the street and come a callin!! LOL! She's just sit and scratch my door. I used to have to call her mom and ask her "Are you missing someone?" She'd come over and Chloe would be sitting on the sofa, just relaxing and looking like she had just pulled off a great escape! My partner reminded me of my yorkie love, when it came out in conversation that we should get a lil' dog. So now we have our own escape artist.

Purely by accident , I had a Pomeranian puppy boy named Toudoux . 1 week after I took him home , he was so sick that he was put to sleep . One of my friends had a litter of Yorkie pup . One day , she came home with one of the pup , I looked at the little one but was not really in the mood to say I wanted one . A week later , I received a phone call from her , she asked me if I was interested to have the puppy I saw , I told her yes but also told her that I would pay for the little one . That day Maïa came home . She was not the perfect puppy that I have seen in magazines . She didn't grow a full floor lenght coat , she looked like an Australian Terrier but telling you how she was would take at least a dozen pages . Maïa was my Yorkie of a lifetime . Later ,
I had Zsa Zsa but it is another story .

Growing up, my mother always had a Yorkie in the home. I don't know where her love of the dog started from, but I do have a vivid memory of one of the Yorkies she had when I was in junior high.

She adopted this Yorkie mix from the pound as an itty bitty puppy. The pound told her it was a Yorkie mixed with an english bulldog. The puppy was a female and my mother let one of my brothers name it - his favorite name when he was 5 was Cindy. So that was the puppy's name. Let me tell you, as this puppy grew up she became the UGLIEST dog you ever did see in your entire life!! Let this be a lesson to you all - don't mix Yorkie with bulldog!! (note: I LOVE both breeds, bulldogs as much as Yorkies, but they definitely were not meant to be mixed.) Anyway, at the time, my mother was a single mom of four children - my dad was completely deadbeat and disappeared so there was no child support coming in. We lived off welfare and the church donations, and resided in a very small apartment above a store in a really bad section of the town. We were the only white family for at least four blocks. I kid you not. Now the odd thing is, Cindy grew up to hate black people! We have no idea why, because all of my friends growing up were black, all our family friends were black, we have members of the family that are black. So this stumped us. For some reason Cindy just hated them. Eventually, she attacked one too many people and we were told to put her down. My mother cried her eyes out. After we lost Cindy, my mom didn't get another Yorkie again until after she married my stepfather and a few of my sisters and brothers were born (I'm the oldest of nine, btw). First my mom had a Yorkie that she adopted as an older dog. It died of old age. I never met him cause I lived half a country away with my first husband. Then my mom adopted Clancy, a male Yorkie puppy that was just freaking adorable. I loved him soooo much. When he was 7 years old, one of my baby brothers, too young to understand, opened the front door and Clancy ran out. He was hit by a car and died instantly. My mother called me and we both cried oceans of tears for him. I still miss him to this day. A few months later, my mom adopted Teddy, from the same breeder as Clancy. She still has Teddy to this day. He is just a hilarious little boy who absolutely adores my husband. Last Febuary (heh, a year ago) I visited my mom's house for the last time before my spine surgery. I was still confined to rest most of the time back then, and Teddy was my constant companion. I knew then that I wanted my own Yorkie. After surgery, my disability never got any better, in fact my leg became worse over a few months. Big dogs were no longer an option as I couldn't control them, walk them, or care for them due to their size. Cinamin, our Brittany continued to go downhill in health due to her age of 13 years. I came here to Yorkie Talk, told my story and asked for a Yorkie to adopt. I wanted one to fill the hole in my heart left after my son died, so I had to have a male. I wanted one to be a companion to me during the day as I struggle to learn to live with my disability. I wanted one to cheer me up and bring me out of my depression. And an angel from this community helped God answer my prayer, and I am now the adopted mommy of my Matthias.

After having Matthias in my life, I will always be the most avid fan of Yorkies. He has made all my dreams come true. Whenever I am at my lowest emotionally, he comes up and sits on my lap and covers my face in kisses. He cuddles with me every single night as I lay in bed reading waiting for the pills to kick in so I can sleep. He is my constant companion throughout the day. And he is the son I never got to raise.

I tell ya right now, if I ever win the lottery, I plan on having a huge one story house with Yorkies everywhere! I just love them!

and maybe an english bulldog or two.... neutered of course... no mixing....

My love for Yorkies started when I was a Junior handler . I saw 2 beautiful Yorkies in the ring . This afternoon , I met a very reputable breeder of Yorkie , I asked lots of questions about the breed . The breeder offered me to handle one of her beauties . Since then she became my mentor , I purchased 2 of her dogs and Lauren and I continue to go to dogshows together .

When I was about 5 years old I saw a little Chawawa in a little coffee cup in the back of a magazine and imagined one with long hair and a bow and thought “How cute would that be, and if it only…..”. However, even though I had made it up, that image and longing stayed with me until one day when my husband and I decided to help a woman that worked for us. She had put a deposit on a puppy and had decided not to take the pup and the breeder refused to refund her $200.00 dollar deposit.

When we walked into his house he had two beautiful Yorkshires and I was mesmerized because it looked so like what I had always dreamed in my head and still in all those years imagined owning. I told my memories and explained my longing to this Breeder and he said “I will be right back” and walked out the door. He came back with a little bundle of fur with a bow in it and placed it in my hands. It was my dream come true, a memory turned reality and I to this day know that it was a fate long ago destined!

From that day on I have never been without a Fur kid, nor will I ever. I was destined to adore them and they me. Yorkies are the children that I knew I would never have, which was just a part of the destiny.

Well what more can I say….. The dream goes on!

My nanna had yorkies all her and my life, I have pictures of me kissing one on the nose when I was 13 months old, and one of me with some pups when I was 7.

My nanna bought her last yorkie in 2000, a baby girl called Meg, but my nanna died 6 months later so we took Meg in.

I have always wanted a yorkie of my own though

When I was in grade school, the girl that cut my hair had one,, Pierre, was his name, and I would see all the pictures she had on her station, then I would see her walking him all the time, he was a little one,and he'd always be way out in front of her, when they were walking,,and I said " Someday I will have one of those dogs."
