| this may sound like a stupid question but ok my yorkie is 15 wks tomorrow, and i just wanted to know why there seems to be a lot of talk about harness. a lot of you seem to use them and im wondering if i should get Ella one. right now she just has a collar and leash. are harness more for fashion or are they better than using a collar and lease? sorry, but just want to do the right thing. also if a harness is recommended where is a good place to find them? thanks |

| Harnessess are not just a fashion statement -- they are a necessity -- they ease the stress on the dogs neck and therefore ease treachea (windpipe) stress. |

Yorkies have very delicate throats, and collapsed tracheas can be a problem. That said, I use a collar for obedience training, but I've been criticized for that.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | We got our girl's harnesses at Petsmart...they come in different colors and sizes!! It is very important that you switch her to a harness....it is for your little's safety!!

| Yes, definitely, you want to get a harness! Most all of the petstores carry them. Just get a regular harness. They make all kinds of special "no-pull" harnesses but those work by pinching the dog in the chest area - NOT necessary! The cheap kind is what you want...

| everyone gave you great input already, so im just going to make one recommendation for when you go to pick one out, if ella is very small, try a cat harness because they actually fit a little better. FastEddie recommended this to me because Sirius' harness was too big even though it was THE smallest size they carried for dogs. Alaskayorkie- i think for training purposes, using a collar ups the sucess by like 400%- i use a harness when i walk Siri, but for training a few times a week we use the collar. its not like im tugging at him or anything, so i dont think its harming him. and once hes trained, i hope to not need to use it, so if someone gives ya crap, send em my way too

| I used a collar on Gracie (who is 3 pounds) untill I was too pregant and could not keep up with her anymore (I always took the collar off as soon as we got home!). I had a collar expecially made for her tiny neck, pink with white polka dots with a matching leash!! It was a very soft cotton collar that was very light weight! (and machine washable!!!) Since I have started using a harness I find that our walks are more enjoyable and I can walk instead of running to keep up with her. I found a wonderful harness at Petsmart but do not know the brand. It fit her tiny little body just perfectly and she cant wiggle out of it. I took her with me when I bought the harness so that I could try them on her to ensure a good fit. The only problem I have with the harness is sometime Gracie gets so excited that we are going to go walk that I can't get her to stay still long enough to get her into it !! |

| Yes a harness is the best for Yorkies. I have the step in kind also and love them but I do agree for training purposes a collar works better. You can get their attention better with a collar. |
