Yes, a harness is recommended for Yorkies, and it has nothing to do with fashion. You can probably do a search for "harness" and find quite a bit of discussion on it.

Yorkies have very delicate throats, and collapsed tracheas can be a problem.

That said, I use a collar for obedience training, but I've been criticized for that.
