Omg Large birds swooping down and picking up yorkies?

We were told by our breeder not to leave our yorkies outside by themselves. They are 2.5 and 4.5 lbs. They said Hawks, Eagles and Turkey buzzards could swoop down and get them. I called the Humane Society and they said YES!! OMG!! Has anyone els heard of this?

Yes, I was told this same thing too. One of the only times Tia has gone in our backyard, I happened to look up and noticed two big birds of pray (I'm thinking hawks, but could be wrong) circling the yard from way up in the sky. Scared the crap out of me!

Wow. Thanks for the warning. I never even thought about that. Bailey goes outside all the time by himself, but I guess that's going to stop

I've also heard about this and I never let Maddie outside alone because of that. The other day when I was at the vet, I saw a guy who lives about a block away and he told me a hawk tried to get his cat one day. I remember seeing hawks...they had a nest nearby and would glide around the neighborhood. I hope they don't come back this summer! The breeder I got Maddie from showed me a mark on her border collie where a hawk or eagle had tried to get him...he was too heavy for the bird and dropped after take off. It IS scary! And turkeys...do they fly? They run wild around our city, but I never thought of them hurting little animals. My mom saw something on a show not too long ago about Yorkies being prey for these large birds and on this show they said an eagle can spot his prey from 2 miles away! Sounds unreal to me, but could be true. Anyway, guess we better all be on our guard. I keep Maddie tied up with a long rope so she can still run, mainly because I figure if some animal should try to get her, I'd be able to grab her faster. Am I paranoid or what? LOL

Yes, we had a large owl that would often try to dive bomb my maltese when we lived in town. Now that we live in a rural area I have noticed many hawks, some attacking my outside bird avery trying to get at my cockatiels! My girls love to go outside so I bought a large fenced pen and covered it with a big tarp so if they want to be outside when I can't be with them, I put them in there. I wasn't so worried about my new maltese as she has grown to be 7 lbs, however my husband reminded me that hawks can swoop down and grab those large jackrabbits that we have all over out here. So I am even very protective of her.

Thank you for the warning!! I've never thought of birds as a hazard for my baby before.. I never knew owls, hawks or eagles would eat dogs... But now I can see how possible this is. It's actually a bit scary, don't you think? I usually keep Cocoa in-door anyway, so there's not much for me to be on the look-out for now. Being informed about something like this is always good though. Thanks again!!

Yes, so sad but true. I was told by a friend that she knew of a lady who had her Yorkie outside on a leash. An owl swooped down, grabbed the Yorkie and tried to take off in the air with the poor Yorkie in the owl's grasp.

The lady was on the end of the leash pulling as hard as she could and probably panicking to know end and the owl let go. The Yorkie did have some wounds but were treatable. The Yorkie healed just fine.

So, even outside on a leash we need to be careful!

I had this h apppen to my Peke. She weighed 14#. I was with her, and an owl swooped down and tried to grab her back. I was right there, and scared it off. But, poor dog had cuts on her back. Wish we could leave them outside for awhile by themselves, though. Of course, my Snoodles will not leave my side. The minute she hears me walking toward the door, she comes like a bat out of hell! Just this month when we were looking for our new little Yorkie, I talked to a lady in Marlow,OK who had 5 puppies for sale. The father of the puppies was 3 1/2 #s. One evening she let him out & he tore off to their barn & an owl swooped down & carried him off. She said it was the worst sound she ever heard! He never got to see his litter!!

It happened right here in MD not 5 miles from Balto. A baby I placed was an adult who was NEVER allowed outside, period. One day she scooted out the back door and not 10 feet from the house a hawk swept down and grabbed her by the back. She was heavier OR the hawk didn't get a good hold and it grabbed her wee face with its beak to get a better grip, and she wriggled free. Luckily, the talons did not sever her spinal cord-a very real possibility. She has talon mark scars down both sides of her spine and a scar on her face. Otherwise she is fine..I have always told buyers of my animals NEVER, NEVER LET THEM OUT EVEN ON THE DECK!!! My son is a licensed falconer and his demo of hunting with his hawk made me aware of the sound of their wings. One came down over my back deck and I HEARD THE SOUND OF THE WINGS. I waived the newspaper and my arms and chased her away. My baby was at my feet!!!!!!!

That just scares me to death! Oh My God How awful that would be to see your little guy swept away and killed! I will watch mine really really carefully. Thankfully, she doesn't go out of my sight!

I could see how this would be scary for everyone. I, however, don't think I have to be worried because I have never even seen a large bird in Chicago and my dog won't go outside... for even a second

Kristy! He won't even go outside? Mine loves it outside, but only if I am with her. She is such a baby. The other day a crow flew over and cawed, and she came running like a bat out of hell! But I am sure going to be more vigilant from now on!
