| Potty Training Help Needed Hi There We have an adorable 10 month old Yorkie pup and we are having a tough time training him to potty ( specifically poo) outside. Sometimes he does it and he knows he is supposed to. And lots of times we can take him out several times around the time he should be ready and he is so busy sniffing and enjoying himself that he doesn't go. Once back inside within 5-10 minutes he will sneak off and leave us a nice surprise. If anyone has any great tricks, we would love to hear them. Thanks, Jen |

| Welcome to YT, glad to have you aboard He needs to be on a schedule to eat then out to do his business, this must be consistent no matter what weather conditions are. Feed same time every day, all dogs do not need to relieve themselves 20, or 30 minutes after they eat. So the beginning is going to be a hit and miss. After he eats wait 20 minutes then take him out on a leash, tell him what you want him to do, pee pee or poo poo what ever words you use, keep repeating and repeating and repeating until he makes what you ask of him. When he does a reward treat should be given along with lots of verbal praise. When they are outdoors they are very distracted and yes, every blade of grass must be sniffed two and 3 times. Remember, outdoors has many great intriguing and strange smells and sounds, these yorkies have tunnel focus and selective hearing when outdoors, so it's important to keep repeating what you're outside to do. Give him time to do his sniffing and investigating, then start telling him what to do. Even if he has made his business indoors, still take him outdoors at the scheduled time, he needs to know he goes out at a certain time. Dogs are creatures of habit, have little alarm clocks built into them, they know what time they get certain things and why scheduling is so important, rain, sleet, hail, whatever, he needs to be taken outdoors. It's never the dog that fails, it's the owners, you gotta put the time in to get the results you want.

| I will only add that, since you seem to know when he “should be ready,” don’t bring him inside and then let him sneak off to do his business. Keep him on his leash, or watch him like a hawk, or put him into his crate until his next trip outside. If you don’t give him an opportunity to sneak off and leave surprises, he won’t do so. It will be inconvenient for a while, but it should be well worth the inconvenience. |

| If there is a certain place you want him to go outside take his poo there for inside and then take him to that spot to go poo and don't let him have the ability to move around the whole yard just stay near that one spot. Do not give him free roam in the house either when you know he is going to go to the bathroom. My youngest put off big signals she was going to go and if she didn't go outside my eyes did not come off of her and when I knew she was getting ready I snagged her up and we went outside and didn't come in until she went.

| Enzo is 7 months old and about 90% potty trained outside. He has never used a pee pad, primarily because he treated the pads like chew toys 😂. My wife and I are retired, so we had the time to consistently take him outside and that's the key in my opinion. We set him on a 1 hour timeframe when we got him at 10 weeks and yes, this included all night. He is now on a 2-3 hour timeframe and has an accident about once a week or 10 days (Mainly because we let our guard down and give to much freedom). If you have the time, patience and give plenty of praise, you will get good results. We also trained him to use a Bell we keep at the patio door and he uses it consistently. Enzo is still in the Brat stage, so he tries our authority from time to time. Good Luck! |
