| Homemade Yorkie food - advice needed Hello, I have a very active 1 year old yorkie name Sophie. She is 4 lb now. She has been doing very well on Royal Canine Puppy food but when I switched her to Royal Canine Small breed adult food when she turned 11 month old, she started to have fever, bloody diarrhea and her health deteriorated very quickly. After vet visits, she was fine then it started again and it became a cycle. I lost my last yorkie girl and she had a condition but this reminded me of her so much. This time, I kept thinking that it's the food that is causing this problem. About a month ago, when this happened again, I stopped giving her the dry food completely. I stopped giving food for 24 hours and gave her Pepto and it stopped the diarrhea. I cooked white short grain rice and added warm water and gave her for a day. And her stool was better. Then I started to add natrual food like sweet potato and carrots and freeze dried chicken/ beef liver(Crump's natrual brand). And ever since then, this did not occur anymore. I went to local fish market and found a pack of Salmon skin that was packaged after they fillet the salmon. It was like 3 bucks for 3 full salmon skins & tiny bit of fillet meat from bone. I rubbed them with olive oil and baked them 350 degrees for about 40 minutes and made a huge bags of salmon treats. I also gave her unsweetened greek yogurt but noticed that her stool became littlebit liquidy so, I stopped. Anyhow, I am not sure by doing all this myself, I am taking away any nutrients and need to add vitamins or supplements to the diet. Any suggestions on whether I can continue with these food? |

| You need to look at recipes from a vet nutritionists. Petdiets.com is a good resource as well as Justfoodfordogs.com and balanceit.com. It is very important that it is balanced or it could cause so many problems.

| Dr. Harvey's Veg-to-Bowl Fine Ground I use a premix to which I add protein and oil. Works well for us. For me and my girls it was a good compromise between home cooking and commercial. The flavor is controlled by the protein so they never get bored. |

| Proteins mostly chicken, beef and turkey and occasionally they get pork, eggs, or fish. As far as oils go - coconut, grapeseed, and olive are the ones I use most. |

| Yes, it is a great site. It is run by a veterinary nutritionist.....I would not use any food for my pups that are not balanced by one.

| I have a friend who feeds her dogs raw food. And Her dogs are very healthy but I cannot imagine giving raw meat to Sophie. I am unsure what grade of meat I have to buy to be safe. So I tried to find the alternative. I end up buying freeze dried meat which is intended as treats I think. I also cook chicken breasts, sweet potatoes, carrots and put inside an ice cube tray and freeze them. So I can take out one at a time and mix with other natural food. Sophie eats very little so i try to invest in the good quality freeze dried food. Balanceit.com website also has fruit group which is surprising to me. Dried apricot and orange and mango are new to me. If you know of any good brand of supplement like probiotic or vitamins I can give, please let me know. |
