| Squirrel or Katy???? Or Both? Or Either!?? This morning after fresh rain, I put on my Duster (brown long raincoat for riding horses, comes down to shins) and my boots, Katy's Raincoat and out for her morning walk. As we came around the house, two things odd. A FLOCK of Oriels, (black and yellow birds, my spelling is probably way off) A flock? We usually only see them in 2s or very small flocks. Where is Teanna? Our GSD usually stays right with us, unless......she spots something out back as we come out the back door. I was walking Katy and here came Teanna out of the back with a red Squirrel running with her, every once in a while in her mouth, then free, then....up the tree it went. THEN THIS HAPPENED! A huge bird was flying in. Honestly. HUGE! I was watching it. I was walking behind Katy, on lead, I had stopped to watch Teanna. The EAGLE LANDED! Right on the tree just over and above us! Watching. I was watching. I froze, deciding what to do. I moved forward and it hunched then flew off. IT HAD AT LEAST A 6' WING SPAN. It occurred to me latter. As the Eagle was watching Katy, I might have just looked like a tree, covered in brown, boots under. I fear that if she were out there alone, I would no longer have that tiny dog. I think the Eagle came in for the squirrel and then saw Katy. I LOVE living in the country.....but Katy can not go out alone. |

| Oh no! Be very careful, I’ve heard stories of small dogs being snatched up by large birds even while on-leash. And in cities and suburbs. We have a flock of turkey vultures living directly across the inlet from our house. One day I had let the dogs out in the yard and I was on the porch and all of a sudden I saw a huge shadow, had to be 14 feet across. My mind was thinking oh an airplane and then I realized there was no noise and I thought WTF and I ran out into the yard to protect the dogs but that was very scary and I know the 14 foot shadow was a bit bigger than what the actual bird was but it was still too close for comfort. When I start sewing again I’ll be designing a line of bird repellant Yorkie vests.

One afternoon a lady was walking her tiny Chihuahua on leash, a Falcon swooped down and snatched that dog up, the lady was screaming and tugging on the leash, the bird released the tiny dog, the damage the talons made on that dog it was miracle the dog lived. The Falcon trainer knew it was the new bird, caught and for more training. Just trying to point out these prey birds have no fear of humans, and in a park filled with ppl miss judged the tiny Chi for a rat. In an open field there is no difference. If the bird is not able to carry the dog off and releases it, what those talons do to the dog can be fatal. Guess no one needs to tell you to be careful or never let a wee lil dog out alone after that experience. Consider yourself very, very lucky that eagle flew off, BTY I LOVE those red squirrels, so tiny and oh so cute. I haven't seen any in my heavily wooded area, but do have the flying nocturnal ones. I am glad that Teanna's catch was able to get away lol.

| We have several Eagles nest around where we are. Once we had a deer get hit and make it to the back of our property and die and we had 2 Eagles move in and start eating. They are very big and can even mess up humans. My grandmother taught the dogs that if you yell big birds outside they all come running in. We seem to get lots of hawks and buzzards. It seems with the lock down more animals are coming out and about also. Luckily we have a lot of different wild animals on our property so they are more likely to go after what Is natural for them then my dogs dressed in bright colors.

| Thank God that Eagle didn't suddenly swoop down while you were standing apart from Katy and suddenly stab or grab her up. Don't know what she weighs but some of the largest, mature Eagles could potentially have tried to paralyze or kill her with a well-placed beak stab, claw points thrust into the base of the skull, neck, back or abdomen and/or flown off with her clutched in those raptor-like strong feet. I've read horrible stories and seen part of some awful video of those gorgeously beautiful, powerful winged carnivores catching small four-legged animals to taking down adult wolves, striking a bear, kangaroo, deer, etc., often with help from a second Eagle. Too awful to watch most of it. Just as bad, it could have dropped her from 30+ up, swoop down, reclaim and carry her off! Now that it knows she's there, it could return and this time do its worst unless you are right there over her and have a way to fight it off. Even then, it could attack you out of its desperation for food to move you away from her or down to the ground. If it hits your head, knocks you down or you lose your balance trying to fight it off, she's prey. Be very careful from now and plan how to scare off, defeat one of these attacking birds in the future.

Thank you for your concern. The weird think is, Teanna keeps an eye on us, has since we first brought Katy home. If Teanna tires of walking with us, my Katy LOVES to sniff EACH blade of grass, Teanna will sit down and watch us. I love this. I know Teanna has my back, and now Katy's. Katy weighs 5 pounds. I walk her on a 4' leash, BECAUSE I am very very very careful. We have all KIDS of Wildlife and I have 'lived out' for most of my life. | |

| I remember this one time, I was taking my previous yorkie Brandie for a walk. It looked like something out of a Stephen King horror movie. It was a cloudy overcast day just like out of a horror movie. Brandie was getting on my nerves wanting to go out so I decided to take her out before it started raining. As I was leaving the house I looked back at my house and on the roof were the biggest birds of prey I have ever seen in my life. Here's the weird thing. About 3 of them was just standing on the roof with their wings spread out.........had to been at least 5 feet from wing tip to wing tip. They were just sitting there frozen. They looked like statues.....talk about eerie. Seeing 3 huge vultures with their wings out standing frozen on the roof with an spooking cloudy overcast day was a little disturbing. Does anyone know why these huge birds will just stand with their wings out? I've only seen that with the birds of prey.......I just always wonder why the do it. It looked spooking as hell Last edited by yavenay; 04-28-2020 at 06:01 AM. |

Saw Yutube videos and wildlife documentaries on TV before of them attacking with other kids in the yard, dogs, other people, animals in the yard and suddenly that desperate bird is there and knocks the human down and grabs the prey, one being a baby old enough to sit up in the yard on its on, which it dropped after a bit. Don't know if the baby one was legit though it sure looked it but many others was video hunters, hikers, etc., had incidentally taken or taken from a fixed wildlife camera. You can't watch the full attack as I started to do, thinking the prey would be quickly killed and silenced while I looked away but one on a seagull I think it was and the attack seemed to involve the predator bird starting to eat the smaller bird, which was on its back and screaming out the whole time. It was awful! I couldn't bear to watch full on but heard the screams continue and would glance back and the attack was over 1+ minutes before I closed it out and took a quite while to get my mind off of that and I promised not to watch anything else like that again. Horrible. You can't un-see that ever. Saw them try to take down cougars and wolves with a sudden, unexpected hit and hit bears, humans, big, powerful dogs, whatever. Scary things, those huge birds. And they often have a starving little babies to feed, depending on them, so they are working to maintain their family but horrible to know that has to go on.

They held their position. I was keeping an eye on them in case they tried to go for Brandi (RIP). So I watched them until I turn the corner. That had to been at least 45-60 seconds. They were gone when I got back from our walk. The silhouette of those huge birds with their 5-6ft wing span against a dark cloudy sky........Stephen King would of loved it.
