| ![]() Our new, 18 week old puppy has started to hide in my closet when he is stressed. I’m worried he’s developing some security issues. He’s only been with us for 4 days. I want him to be comfortable around people as we have a busy house with friends stopping by and I want to be able to take him out with us, when we’re out and about. Any ideas on his behaviour and how do I go about socializing him so he is a well adjusted companion? Thanks |

| ![]() Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby. If your baby has had all his vaccines you can enroll him in puppy training classes. Here he will be socialized with other puppies and ppl. Take him to stores that allow dogs, PetSmart, PetCo, Pet Supplies, Loews, Home Depot. Put him in the baby seat of the cart and stroll through the store. He will meet and see a lot of ppl. Depending on where you live leash walk him where he will see ppl. The most important thing is, 4 days is not long enough for him to adjust to his new home, new humans, sounds, smells, schedules. He hasn't had time to bond with you, to trust you, remember, he just left the only home he knew for the first 18 weeks of his life. Working with and teaching your puppy basic commands, sit, stay, come, helps build a bond between you and the puppy and always reward with a treat and happy praise when he does what you are teaching him to do. Since he has been with you and many ppl have entered your home in these 4 days may have overwhelmed him since he hasn't gotten use to you and his new family yet. Sit him on your lap and try brushing his hair, touching and holding his paws, bond with him so he gains trust in you, so he can trust strangers that will enter his new life.

| ![]() Congratulations on your new little one! As with so many puppy issues, time, patience and love should help matters. As others have said, he will need some time to build a relationship with you in order to trust that he can depend on you to keep him safe from all of the new sights, smells, noises, etc. that he is experiencing. Best of luck, and welcome to YT! ![]()

| ![]() Thank you for your response. You put me at ease. I now realize that he is learning to trust me so I will be more patient. Finn just finished his vaccinations so I’m looking into some puppy socializing classes. |

| ![]() That is great that you will be taking him to puppy training. I would wait a few weeks, let him get to know you better, to build some trust in you. Some pups bond right away, some it takes a bit more time to build trust. These puppy days are very important to young pups and new surroundings. Let us know how baby Finn progresses.

| ![]() I got a note from PetCo a couple weeks ago. They offer, can't remember what they called it, something like, Puppy Socials, every week, check Stores near you, on Saturday or Sunday, where puppies 6 months and under can come FOR FREE and meet other puppies. I am sure they are hoping each will sigh up for classes. This might be GREAT for some to check out how their puppies act in Stores and around other puppies. I was hoping to take Katy....she turned 6 months old yesterday....that happened fassssssst! Just a thought for those that might have reasons they could not attend puppy classes, and for those that live too far for weekly classes.....I get that. |

Nonsense for just a play period, an introduction to other puppies. I personally do not recommend a chain store for training, using a pvt. school is / was my choice. Just my own personal opinion based on my own personal experience .
