| Boy or girl? Buddy bear will be 5 this July and dh has given approval to get another dog. I have been seeking wisdom....do I get a puppy or adult (dh thinks a pup) someone said a boy because girls are bossy, someone else said a girl that calmer. Dh insist s he\he can't be one that needs grooming. What are your recommendations ???

| Let me see if I have this straight, you have a yorkie that needs grooming, the pup has claimed your husband as hers. You want a dog that will be your pup, hubby is allowing you to get another dog but one that does not require grooming. Since this will be your baby, shouldn't it be your choice of what breed you want even if it's one that needs to be groomed. I understand there is extra cost in owning a dog that must be sent out to a groomer, but vet visits are more costly then a grooming every 5 to 6 weeks. In searching for your perfect lil love bug you have to take into consideration dogs that shed fur all over your home to one that does not shed. If you or DH are allergic to dogs you have to select a pup that is hypoallergenic. I have to assume you don't care what breed the dog is, you just want any kind of dog as long as it wants you and not DH. As far as female dogs, in my adult life I have owned 8 female dogs all raised by me as 8 week old pups, none were bossy. It is up to the owner to train the dog basic commands and show the dog you are the boss. Male / female will be bossy if not trained and owner gives them what they are demanding. Dogs are like children, if you give a child everything the child wants then one day you refuse, the child has a temper tantrum, dogs are the same way.

| I'm going to be honest with you, many people say girls are this way and boys are that way and its not always true. It really really depends on the dog. I will say generally I have noticed more issues with having two girls then a boy and girl or boy and boy. My girls don't get aggressive with each other but they occasionally have moments of stare offs and moments of who is actually the alpha. I have heard many more stories about two girls having issues then any other combos. I still think it really very much depends on the dog. My girls are more independent then my boys but I have seen that be the opposite with other dogs.

I agree to a puppy also, one that you train your way. I understand there is extra cost in owning a dog that must be sent out to a groomer, but vet visits are more costly then a grooming every 5 to 6 weeks. Dogs are like children, if you give a child everything the child wants then one day you refuse, the child has a temper tantrum, dogs are the same way. Other then a Chihuahua I cannot think of another breed that does not need groomer visits other then getting their nails clipped and that you can do yourself.

| I think it's not possible to say for sure boys are calmer girls are bossier etc etc. We have a boy who is a 100% mama's boy. I agree it depends a lot on the training and your personality and your lifestyle etc. If you get a puppy it will be easier to train him/her. If you'll get an adult you might be giving a better life and a forever home to a dog that didn't get a chance to have that, but you and husband must be ready for possible behaviour issues. As for the grooming, matese made a very good point about shedding and allergy. If one of those are an issue, I would pick a dog that needs grooming over the one that sheds. |

| When you find what kind of dog you want (all here love Yorkies) and then ask the breeder (who has both for sale) what she thinks will get along with your BB |

| We have only had boys, and several of my previous little guys really preferred me over my husband...which was hurtful to him. With Tyrone and Gus it has been perfect. Ty is all rough and tough, and plays endlessly with Jim. He is snuggly with me when he wants "Mommy love", but there is no mistaking that he is my husband's dog! Gus loves to play with his Daddy, but is constantly cuddled by my side. He is my baby through and through. Dogs, IMHO, are just like children. They come to us ready to love and form relationships, but they are sentient beings. All of my children were raised in the same home, with the same parents, but are very different...same with our furbabies. I don't think that gender, alone, predicts.
