| Over babying? So I wanted to get yalls opinions on this. Ollie is the baby. He came to me with like no socialization and very shy. I have done two different types of puppy classes with him but he still a bit shy outside of the house. At the pet expo he was not comfortable walking with all those dogs and people so he rode in the stroller with Callie and was supper comfortable in there. Well we went to the vet, it was Ollie, Joey and Penny and he was his little shy self even in the exam room. He stands on his back legs and puts his paws on me when he wants to be picked up so I picked him up and held him. Well my mom keep telling me to put him down and let him walk around but when I put him down he just sat under me. I also carried him out when we were checking out and sat him on the counter and he laid down and my mom fused at me again. Is it really that big a deal for me to baby him a bit when we are out if it makes him more comfortable? I don’t pick him up all the time at home when he does it just when we are out. Isn’t him being comforted in my arms making it a better experience then making him shake on the floor?

| If he's scared around ppl and you pick him up or put him in the stroller you are reinforcing his fear, showing him he has something to be afraid of. You should work with him one on one, take just Ollie to Petsmart, Loews, any place that allows dogs, keep him in the basket, I don't let my dog walk in any store he's always in the baby seat of the shopping cart with a blanket under him to keep him from sliding around the metal seat. These stores are not as crowded as expos are. Ollie needs more exposure around ppl and other dogs besides his siblings. At Pet Expo I would have put him in the stroller before entering, before he started to show fear. There are to many ppl at expos for small dogs to be walked on leash, my fear is the dog being stepped on or accidentally being kicked by ppl not watching where they are walking. I will confess I am guilty of coddling Cody at the vet to calm him down, when he relaxes I tell him good boy. More ppl and dog exposure while he's still young.

| The baby Yorkies should socialize with new people and animals frequently, because 3 to 12 weeks is the best period of socialization. Otherwise, you may spend much time training him after this period. It's best to help your pup to build confidence and trust by petting, training, or playing. You should begin with improving the dog-ownership at first, so you could carry your Yorkie with you instead of leaving him at home too long. Puppies are prone to get separation anxiety and cause accidents at home. What's more, Yorkies are very energetic and sensitive, they require lots of exercises and care every day. A trained Yorkie is a great candidate for service dogs for individuals with social anxiety and other mental impairments. Besides the daily walks, you could teach him some obedient training (such as basic commands training and leash training) at home or in the yard. Keep in mind that rewards (such as treats, toys, and praise) are their biggest motivation and target. During the training, you could shorten the gap between your dog and instruct your dog to be more obedient. To introduce your dog to new people and other dogs, you could refer to the useful tips in this article: How to Train Your Dog to Accept Strangers |

| I picked up and carried Max and Teddy when they were young. It didn't have any negative effects on them long term. They are more than confident as adults. Taylor, you are an excellent trainer. I say trust your instincts. I don't believe there is one formula that fits every dog in the world. Just like raising human children.

| Piper rarely "asks" to be picked up, so when she does, I do so every single time. Piper is very comfortable out and about, but if something bothers her, I do what it takes to reassure her. You are a very savvy, sensitive Yorkie owner and I think your instincts are probably your best bet! |

I think every dog is going to be different. CAN a person reinforce a behavior by coddling etc? YES. But to me, it sounds like you know him very well. There is no reason to let a dog suffer with anxiety etc if there is an easy solution, i.e. picking up. Jackson, on the other hand, is the kind of dog who is made worse by being picked up. He does NOT enjoy being "coddled" or "babied" and it makes him feel MORE vulnerable and scared and like there is something to be scared of. Again, every dog is different. I think continuing your socialization and training classes and doing some individually with him is a great idea to continue boosting his confidence.
