Default Barking Baby

Freya has settled in slowly with me. At first, I thought she was mute lol. Then she started barking when I was out of the room. Lol. Just now she barked with me in my chair working on art--I have my computer in the living room, near the sofa.

I turned in the chair, looked at her, said, "what? you want something?" she just looked at me, was playing with her racoon. One day she gave a short, but loud and demanding bark storm lol.

What do you think? Will she stay like this or get even more talkative? I got her a rope toy the other day an SHE LOVES IT.

I adopted my boy a year ago, and it has taken a while to learn what he wants/needs. He does bark more than my other dogs, but he uses different barks. If Paige, my collie, comes to the French door, he sharp barks until his friend is in. If he needs to go out to tend, he sits in front of me and barks rhythmically. Should he see a car coming to our cul-de-sac, he sounds an alarming tirade.

Yes, he barks, but I have learned he has something to say. My other dogs are therapy dogs and from very young learned to only bark three times, so it took some getting used to when little Max barked until he was understood.

Now that she found her voice she'll be using it often because she knows it gets your attention.

My little Gus is a real barker! I have never had such a vocal dog, and he can be annoyingly stubborn about quieting. He does have different barks, and is always trying to tell us something.

Gus will, of course, do an "alert" bark when the doorbell rings or he sees someone doing yard work, etc. Beau joins in, and it takes awhile for them both to quiet, but we tell them "it is a friend", and they stop.

Likewise a dog bark on TV (or outside) will trigger them until we tell them "it is on the TV".

More annoying is the barking that he will do when playing. The minute my husband sits down in the family room, all three boys race over with their toys, and Gus is usually barking with excitement. Ty often intercepts Gus' toys during playtime, and Gus will bark out of frustration and insult, but it is getting better since Ty will now respond when we tell him "drop it Ty".

All in all, it is easy to tell why Gus is barking, and he is not as excitable as he was as a puppy. He is better able to quiet now, but it seems to be just part of his personality to be very vocal. He is quiet when we are on trips to visit family, but "Mommy's Sweet Baby Gus" (his AKC name) is just the "squeaky wheel" of the pack!

Maybe it is the name????

It’s funny how it seems each yorkie has its own different voice. Callie almost never barks but will do a growl like thing to get your attention, Joey is a big barker and cryer to get your attention and when he is really excited and at normal dog things, Penny will make a growling noice when she wants up in the morning and then only really barks at certain noises, and Ollie only barks and makes noises when he is playing with the others.

You are SO right! We can always tell from a distance who is making a fuss.
Although Gus uses his voice(s) the most, Ty has a piercing whine that he uses when both of us leave the room or go out in the yard to work. Beau has that poodle ability to imitate a crying baby...can't wait for the fireworks tonight. They always set off Beau, and the other two will surely do some sympathetic barking!

I totally understand the fire works thing. We had some go off last night somewhere around us. Joey barked, Callie hid and Penny would occasionally put in a bark. Poor Ollie was looking around like uhhhh whats that.

My guy whines, sometime sounds like a whale, other times a porpoise when he wants out or a treat and yes of course he barks a bit also.

How many babies do you have, and are they all Yorkies?

I thought I was lucky when Scottie came home at 5 months old and didn't make a peep. Some family and friends jokingly asked if he was a mute. I didn't care - I read so much about how Yorkies were yappy and thought I lucked out.

But nooope. No such luck. At around 10 to 11 months old, he discovered his voice. He started barking at ALL sounds. He has a very solid loud manly bark. It was a tough time. It took a LOT of effort to train him out of it. Now he's a good boy - when I say "enough", he stops.

Casie on the other hand, is very bossy, and barks out orders. She's a little smaller and her voice is significantly smaller. To the point where sometimes it's cute. haha... so I let her get away with a bit more barking.
Here she is singing her usual tune... https://www.instagram.com/p/BjkzuocB...ttie.and.casie

So anyway...don't be surprised if you need to look into some training techniques to control the barking later on

I have never been a cat person, most of my family is allergic. My vet has a cat that lives there and Joey absolutely loves him.

I probably won't. Dogs are more my speed. Cats don't respect boundaries. They knock your stuff over lol.

Fabian was very quiet... at first. The "squirrel bark" is incessant as we live in a neighborhood filled with oak trees... and acorns. I swear the squirrels and chipmunks sit on our front doorstep and taunt him, knowing he can't get to them. It's my own darned fault as I didn't want to "stop him from being what he is by nature... a ratter..."
