| Yorkie passed away Hi, I guess my reason for posting on here has to do with looking for answers and seeing if any of you have experienced the same thing that I did. My little one and half year old yorkie Louis passed away Wednesday morning. I am completely heartbroken with his passing. 12 days before he passed I started noticing little things. The first thing I noticed was he was shaking, he was a complete inside dog and my room was never cold so I thought it was odd he was shaking. He weighed 7 pounds and was a little chunkster. So I put on him one of his doggy shirts thinking that maybe he was just cold. I also thought maybe he was hypoglycemic he has never shaken before and never had a bout of hypoglycemia but I gave him some honey thinking that was the issue. The next day the next think I noticed he was breathing really hard and very rapidly. It was a Saturday and the vets were not open but he seemed fine. He wanted me to hand feed him which was unusual and was disinterested in water. However, he was his normal playful self. At that moment, he had the shaking, the rapid breathing, the not interested in food or water but wanted to play. Sunday was much of the same. Monday I called the vet and she knew how Louis had severe separation anxiety he would bang himself on the doors just to get to where I was, he would bark and bang his body at anything that was in the way. I had found a little lump on his shoulder blade and he had one previously that was caused by the rabies vaccination and it was nothing. Things got progressively worse, his breathing got worse but he started eating boiled chicken and would drink alot of water. This Tuesday was the worst he had ever been, he didn't want to walk, he had a neck tilt, he drank a ton of water, he would strain to pee and couldn't lift his leg to pee. I think I forgot to mention that he was constipated and when I mentioned that to the vet she had told me that it sounded like he was constipated and it was causing him to not be hungry and his breathing could have been from pain and she told me to monitor him. Tuesday night he went downhill, I didnt think he was going to die. I had checked his temperature and it was 97.6 and I am guessing his body was in shock. I had asked my mom to watch him for a little bit and he was in his little crate on her bed and she said she turned out her light, he barked and then he took a gulp of air and fell and when she turned on her light he was dead. I have no idea why he died, or what happened. I thought he was just constipated like the vet said. He was otherwise healthy, had all his vaccines, loved to play, loved to eat, loved to be near me and follow me everywhere. In a matter of three days he went from being chunky to being skin and bones. My heart hurts so bad. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm so sorry for your loss . It's hard to say what went wrong for sure. Anytime at all there is a breathing issue of any kind, a dog should go to the vet ASAP - so it's really odd that your Vet didn't have you come in immediately with all of those super concerning issues. Inappetance in dogs is another cardinal sign that something is for sure wrong - dogs who eat normally and then suddenly stop doing that are telling you clearly that something has changed and is wrong. Was he outside at all and could he have eaten anything (ie a Sago Palm nut or leaf, something else toxic, lick antifreeze, etc)...? Do you have spiders or other bugs in the area who have toxic stings...? It also could've been heart/lung related - like a pulmonary embolism, pulmonary edema secondary to CHF (unusual for his age), pleural effusion (but why, I don't know). Lastly, also could've very well been a GI blockage - which absolutely will cause death if untreated. You said he was constipated - when did he last go..? And his symptoms (rapid breathing, struggling to eat, shaking...getting worse on Tuesday with being so weak etc) are all evident of pain signals and finally weakness as the body is starting to shut down from the blockage. Did he have a chew recently where he could've consumed that last big chunk of chew...? Did he eat rocks or anything outside that you noticed before...? Eat from the garbage ever..? Again, so sorry. Those are the things I think of with what you described. It does not sound like a stroke or heart attack in the beginning to me.

| My heart breaks for you and for your late little Louis. Two articles on YorkieTalk helpful to all pet parents, both are in the same thread: These pups are tiny, tiny little ones. (Many human babies weigh more than our adult pets.) Things can go south or get better very quickly. "When to take your dog to the vet immediately." I lost my sweet senior yorkie, Katy, at the end of March after a long illness. I'd have to think back, but at this writing believe essentially all of my "call in" questions to the vet concerned post treatment questions. There were times I asked for a tech visit--just to have a professional take Katy's vitals. Thoughts and prayers with you. |

| I do not have any answers for you as to the reason for the loss of your dear little one, but my thoughts are with you at this painful time.

| Louis was a complete inside dog, he would use a puppy pad. I never allowed him outside because he was so small. Louis was not really big into chewing things and we had baby gates around the house to prevent him from going into certain rooms and he would have never been allowed to get to where the garbage was. The vet had told me to give him warm water enemas to help him go to the bathroom and he had got one two days before he passed away and he had pooped. It was like hard pellets if that makes any sense. The vet told me that with him having been completely healthy and up to date on vaccines and his heart sounded good from his last visit that it was most likely nothing. I should have found another vet, I should have taken him somewhere else. I just trusted her word that he would get over it. I love yorkies, I have two girls and two boy yorkies all ranging in weight. Last Christmas my little Yorkie EMME was diagnosed with pancreatitis and the symptoms Louis presented with were completely different. He was not vomiting and he was not throwing up. I am just completely shocked and heart broken. I know you are not suppose to say you have a favorite dog but, he truly was my favorite. |

| Also, about the constipation Louis had a normal bowel movement on Tuesday, he had got in the position to poop and it was a normal stool. The days after that he would not get in the position to poop at all. |

YT 2000 Club Member | Dog I am so sad hearing about louis. I will pray for comfort at this heartbreaking time. My Ted was 10 and healthy and he passedan suddenly. I just wish our yorkies could live longer. They certainly leave us in the fur but always in our heart. |
