| Brachycephalic? So I was reading Animal Wellness magazine and they had an article on Brachycephalic breeds, well they had a list of breeds that are brachycephalic and they had Yorkshire Terrier on that list. I had never heard of them being in that group could it have been a typo or are they really considered that? It kinda confused me.

| Hope someone responds to this with an answer. I'm also curious if this is a problem with Yorkies. |

| Brachycephalic means "shortened head" and refers to the short nose and flat face of dogs like Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Chihuahuas. Other brachycephalic breeds include Chow Chows, Pekingese, Lhasa Apso, Bull Mastiffs, and English Toy Spaniels. Seems like it must have been a mistake; I couldn't find anything (just a quick search) that would put Yorkies in that category. Ummmm... |

Most often, I don’t find yorkies as a breed associated with brachycephaly. Located one authority categorizing our beloved breed a “moderate brachycephalic.” See reference to 2015 English study documented by Dan G. O’Neill, et. al., “Epidemiological associations between brachycephaly and upper respiratory tract disorders in dogs attending veterinary practices in England.” Study sampling included 170M dogs in 96 clinics. They randomly selected 200 dogs from three categories: “extreme brachycephalic breed types [three] (Bulldog, French Bulldog and Pug),” the “moderate brachycephalic” Yorkshire Terrier and the “non-brachycephalic” Border Terrier and West Highland White Terrier. The study found the extreme breeds “were significantly younger at death than the moderate and non-brachycephalic” dogs. “In summary, this study reports that URT[*] disorders are commonly diagnosed in Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug, Border Terrier, WHWT and Yorkshire Terrier dogs attending primary-care veterinary practices in England. The three extreme brachycephalic breed types (Bulldog, French Bulldog and Pug) were relatively short-lived and predisposed to URT disorders compared with three other small-to-medium size breed types that are commonly owned (moderate brachycephalic Yorkshire Terrier and non-brachycephalic: Border Terrier and WHWT).”Just because the BREED isn’t commonly associated with the condition, doesn’t mean some yorkies haven’t been bred so small or with particular traits that they will likely suffer fates similar to those in the extreme category. Hope this helps. Separately, see "Brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome," Wikipedia (accessed 24 May 2018) *Upper Respiratory Tract Last edited by KatysMom; 05-24-2018 at 08:50 AM. | |

| Another article, see "Brachycephalic Syndrome" in ACVS wherein authors write (emphasis added). Certain breeds of dogs and cats are prone to difficult, obstructive breathing because of the shape of their head, muzzle and throat. The most common dogs affected are the “brachycephalic” breeds. Brachycephalic means “short-headed.” Common examples of brachycephalic dog breeds include the English bulldog, French bulldog, Pug, Pekingese, and Boston terrier. These dogs have been bred to have relatively short muzzles and noses and, because of this, the throat and breathing passages in these dogs are frequently undersized or flattened (Figure 1). Persian cats also have a brachycephalic conformation.Article defines "Brachycephalic Syndrome" as "combination of elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, and everted laryngeal saccules." |

| Here's a Vet Info article that puts Yorkshire Terriers in the brachycephalic category: https://www.vetinfo.com/brachycephalic-dogs.html . I'm not convinced, though.

| Here's a research article that refers to Yorkshire Terriers as brachycephalic, compared to the dolichocephalic German Shepherd: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/...2001.tb00960.x Quote:

| For some reason, my post has broken link to main article mentioned. Hopefully the fix below works. Dan G. O'Neill, et al, "Epidemiological associations between brachycephaly and upper respiratory tract disorders in dogs attending veterinary practices in England," published 2015 by US National Library of Medicine; National Institutes of Health. |

| Very interesting information. I just don't know that I would have put them in that group.
