Brachycephalic? So I was reading Animal Wellness magazine and they had an article on Brachycephalic breeds, well they had a list of breeds that are brachycephalic and they had Yorkshire Terrier on that list. I had never heard of them being in that group could it have been a typo or are they really considered that? It kinda confused me. |
Hope someone responds to this with an answer. I'm also curious if this is a problem with Yorkies. |
Brachycephalic means "shortened head" and refers to the short nose and flat face of dogs like Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Chihuahuas. Other brachycephalic breeds include Chow Chows, Pekingese, Lhasa Apso, Bull Mastiffs, and English Toy Spaniels. Seems like it must have been a mistake; I couldn't find anything (just a quick search) that would put Yorkies in that category. Ummmm... |

Another article, see "Brachycephalic Syndrome" in ACVS wherein authors write (emphasis added). Certain breeds of dogs and cats are prone to difficult, obstructive breathing because of the shape of their head, muzzle and throat. The most common dogs affected are the “brachycephalic” breeds. Brachycephalic means “short-headed.” Common examples of brachycephalic dog breeds include the English bulldog, French bulldog, Pug, Pekingese, and Boston terrier. These dogs have been bred to have relatively short muzzles and noses and, because of this, the throat and breathing passages in these dogs are frequently undersized or flattened (Figure 1).
