First time Yorkie owner looking for some advice/reassurance (long post)

I absolutely agree Veterinarian technology has escalated since I last had a puppy, I always follow what my vet tells me, however, I would still wait for all core vaccines to be given before I took a puppy out, it's not necessary to rush to get a baby out. They will have a lifetime of outdoors once they are fully protected, so keeping them indoors for a few weeks is no big deal, I wouldn't want anyone fawning over my puppy with just 2 vaccines. My vet gives 2 vaccines at one time, since joining YT it is advised to give one shot, wait 2 weeks then get the 2nd one, another piece of advise that made sense to me, so that is what I now do. Several years ago my senior girl had a bad reaction to getting 2 vaccines at the same time, vaccines that she had always gotten with no reactions, I never want any of my babies to ever go through that, so we take one vaccine at a time now.

Joey had reactions with his vaccines too he only ever gets one and I give him Benadryl before and he ends up having to have 2 days of pain meds. He is the first one I ever had this issue with and it scared the crap out of me. He seemed to have the biggest reaction to Lyme but it’s necessary for us and if I do the Benadryl and pain meds he seems ok. Any dog under 20 pounds should really only ever get one and I wish every vet did that. Some just load them up.

In my area of Pa. Lyme vaccine must be given also. This past June Cody needed Distemper, Rabies and Lyme shots, The first visit he got his distemper shot, 2 weeks later he was to get the rabies shot, when I am fished with the vet a tech comes in to give Cody his rabies shot, before I could say anything he gave Cody a 2nd shot, I asked what vaccines did you just give my dog, he said rabies and lyme, I tell him I didn't want the lyme today, he tells me the dog needs a lyme vaccine, I tell him I don't do two vaccines in one visit, all I wanted was the rabies today in 2 weeks I was coming back for the lyme. Well the nx day Cody is listless, not himself, I call the vet and speak to a tech I am told some dogs get that reaction from the lymes and he will be fine in a day. Well, last year he got just a lyme shot and he was just fine. I was furious with the tech that gave him the rabies and lyme together.

We don’t have a huge issue with ticks in our yard but Lyme is an issue in the area and I’m afraid they might get a tick at the park or like I want to do tracking with Joey and that’s a great way to pick up ticks. I would have been pissed to. I know most of the techs pretty good so when they are taking the stats and stuff I tell them what I want and have never had that issue luckily. I’m not a huge person who speaks out in real life unless it comes to my pups lol.

That would anger me so much! Especially after specifically asking!

My vet is the only place I don't like to cause issues, it could be taken out against my pup god forbid he ever gets sick and has to stay there a day or so. They have many new techs that I don't know. Believe me, that will never happen again.

I live in a heavily wooded area with bob cats, coyotes, black bears and herds of deer. Lyme is a must for us.

I completely understand that. I never get nasty I just speak up and ask lots of questions and stuff. I did my shadowing there so we all know each other well lol. We honestly I think are one of their best costumers we joke about us owning part of the building lol.

Before we moved we had woods in our back yard and ticks were very bad. We moved and have very few trees and our fenced in yard is right in the middle of our three acres. Ticks are rare here now but the big farm area the trainers place is, is kinda woodsy. I would just rather be safe then sorry because I was hearing so many stories and dogs dying from Lyme. We have lots of deer, we had a big buck walk right up our driveway one night.
